Sheet vinyl flooring is a common floor covering for kitchens and baths because it is inexpensive compared to tile. It's also easier to maintain. Unlike tile, a sheet vinyl floor can be applied directly to a plywood subfloor without a concrete backer. Before you install a sheet vinyl floor in a kitchen, sink the heads of all nails and screws below the surface of the subfloor and scrape off any old adhesive or other imperfections as they will be seen or felt below the sheet vinyl floor. Remove the refrigerator or any other appliances or furniture from the kitchen.

Tap a flat pry bar behind the baseboards or quarter-round with a hammer. Gently pry the trim away from the wall around the perimeter of the room. Roll out the kraft paper about one inch from the baseboard along one edge of the kitchen. Tack the paper to the floor with a 4-inch strip of masking tape every three feet along the edge. Cut the paper at the end of the floor, using scissors. Tack down the paper one inch from the edge of the wall. Roll out a second strip of kraft paper, overlapping the first strip by three inches. Tape the second strip to the first. Continue adding strips until the kraft paper covers the entire floor, one inch from each edge. Hold one leg of a framing square flat on the floor against the baseboard and mark the opposite side of the leg onto the paper, using a pencil. Extend the mark all the way around the perimeter of the floor, making a continuous pencil marks the width of the framing square, away from the edge of the floor. Roll out the sheet vinyl flooring in a larger room or outside.

Ensure it is face-side up. Carefully remove the kraft paper template in one large piece and place it over the sheet vinyl. Tape the template to the flooring to hold it securely in place. Place the framing square against the line on the paper template in the same manner in which you drew the line on the paper in the kitchen in Step 2. Use the outside edge of the framing square as a guide and mark a cut line onto the sheet vinyl flooring, using a washable marker. Work around the template until the marker's cut line is complete. Place a scrap piece of plywood or thick cardboard under the flooring. Cut the flooring along the cut line, using a sharp utility knife. Move the plywood along as you work to protect the floor below. Roll up the flooring and carry it into the kitchen. Roll out the flooring without any adhesive to check the fit. Make any adjustments to the edges to ensure a tight fit, using the utility knife. Roll up the flooring on half of the floor and peel that half back onto the rest of the flooring.

Apply an even layer of vinyl flooring adhesive according to the manufacturer's instructions. Spread the adhesive across the exposed half of the subfloor. Notch the adhesive, using a notched trowel. Pull the flooring back into place and press it onto the adhesive. Pull back the opposite side and spread the adhesive. Notch the adhesive, using the notched trowel. Press the vinyl flooring to the second half of the floor. Roll over the entire floor to remove any imperfections and embed the flooring onto the adhesive, using a floor roller. Put any baseboards or quarter-round trim back onto the base of the walls. Apply a thin bead of tub and tile caulk around the perimeter of the room between the floor and walls, if you have no baseboards or trim.
