Sea lion devours horn shark off Newport Beach coast
A sea lion has a 4-foot long horn shark for lunch off the coast of Newport on Monday.
Sure, sea lions look cute and snuggly, with their big ol’ eyes and blubbery bodies.
But don’t be fooled – they are fierce predators.
Newport Coastal Adventure owner Ryan Lawler captured a raw moment Monday, as a sea lion devoured a horn shark off the coast of Newport Beach. Charter guests were aboard the inflatable boat searching for gray whales said to be in the area.
Lawler noticed something splashing, but knew it wasn’t a whale or dolphin. It was enough to get his attention.
“Getting closer, we saw a sea lion violently thrashing around some freshly caught prey,” he told GrindTV. “This is not too uncommon, but we are always interested in what exactly it might be, as the sea lion’s diet varies widely.”
After getting a picture of the predator and prey, he realized the sea lion was having a 4-foot long horn shark for lunch.
“While I have seen sea lions eat thresher sharks, angel sharks, and a variety of skates and rays this was the first horn shark, and a bit of a surprise because of the deeper water we were in (180 feet),” he told GrindTV. “And also keep in mind, the horn shark has two defensive dorsal ‘horns’ to dissuade predators, so this sea lion was being pretty methodical about how it was eating this shark.”
