I did some sharpness compare of 4 different lenses: Tamron 17-50; Canon 50mm 1.8; Canon 28-105 and Canon 24-80 all at 50mm at different apertures. The camera was 20D with fixed white balance. The camera distance to the paper was approx. 1.5m. The shown fragments are 100% cut in the center of the image.
I've been looking around and found a few options but the Tamron 17-50 seems promising. Slightly wider for astrophotography, seems like it has more definition than the kit lens.
