Directions - 10km North of Batemans Bay take the South Durras turn off East of the Princess Hwy at Benandarah (service station).

Travel another 6km along Durras road until you enter the 60km zone of South Durras. Take the left turn along Durras Lake Rd to the end (approx 1.5km) and you will be at Lakesea Caravan Park. 2 hours from Canberra 2.5 hours from Wollongong 4 hours from Sydney 8 hours from Melbourne Temperatures tend to be moderate year round with the wettest month usually being March. Batemans Bay Sailing Charters I'm caught in a staring competition with a kangaroo... ...and it's not nearly as much fun as I thought it was going to be. Making eye contact with any wild animal is always exhilarating, but this one is as tall as me, twice as wide, full of tensed muscle and very, very close. More importantly, he's (and I'm sure it's a he, a girl would never be so impolite) between me and the beach and doesn't seem to be inclined to move anytime soon. Ten minutes later, while I dither about, wondering how to end this wild impasse, Skip gets bored and goes back to grazing the grass, ignoring me completely as I gingerly sidestep around him and scuttle down to the safety of the beach.

It's an astonishing encounter, and one that is repeated almost every time I head down to the beach, but what makes it really amazing is that it happens literally on my door step in one of the most popular caravan parks on the south coast, not in the deepest, darkest wilderness miles from anywhere. Lakesea Holiday Park is wedged on to a triangle of land between Durras Lake and the Pacific Ocean just a few kilometres north of Batemans Bay. Surrounded by Murramarang National Park, it's a haven for paddlers, surfers and wildlife, boasting not only the cleanest coastal lake on the south coast of NSW but also some of the coast's most unspoilt beaches - not to mention some of the biggest and bravest kangaroos I've ever met. It's your classic south coast holiday caravan park, full of happy families paddling in the shallows of the lake, kids digging sandcastles on the beach, squealing in delight as they slide down the slippery dip and belting their big brothers with ping pong bats in the games room.

There's powered caravan and camping sites and a range of simple three-star cabins and slightly flasher ones with ensuites to suit just about any holiday budget, but none of that is the reason why I've decided to stay here. It's the brand new elevated seaside cabins that have enticed me away from the motels and apartments of Batemans Bay and beyond the caravan park's boom gate into one of the best beachside holiday bargains I've found for a long time. The six three-bedroom, two-bathroom, two-storey cabins which are right on the edge of the sand dunes behind the beach are each the size of a small house, and feature undercover parking for two cars, and even your boat, a huge timber deck overlooking the beach, barbecue, air conditioning and ceiling fans, two queen beds (lined supplied), a single bed and a set of bunks, fully equipped kitchen with full-size fridge, microwave and gas oven, flat screen TV and DVD player and lots of lounge space. All for less than $140 a night in low season.

There's plenty to do right here in and around the park, with tennis courts and canoe hire available for the lake and the surf beach just a few metres away (if you can find your way around the sentinel kangaroo), and just about anywhere's a superb place for a spot of fishing. The surrounding national park has a huge network of walking trails and mountain bike tracks and if your kids are the type that find getting back to nature far too dreary for words, South Durras sports ground, incorporating a skate park, basketball court and playing field (soccer, football, etc) is just up the road. It's the middle of whale season (June to November), so I joined a charter cruise aboard the Wandera, a 12.5-metre catamaran for a full day of blue water sailing and whale watching on the waters of Batemans Bay. Skipper John Owens hand built the magnificent sailing vessel over six years, and is passionate about sailing, and it shows. After three hours of tacking across the bay in search of the elusive cetaceans, Owens decides he's had enough and the off-shore breeze is too good to ignore any longer, and with a nod from our group, we give up the hunt and spend a thrilling afternoon skimming across the bay at high speed, wind whipping our hair and spray soaking us

, grins plastered to our faces. As we head back to the wharf at Batemans Bay a pod of dolphins decide to play in the bow wave, racing us home. The whales may have been shy, but the high-speed sail more than compensated. Back at Lakesea, watching the sinking sun paint the sky in pastel pinks and moody mauves from the privacy of the deck, sundowner glass of wine in hand, I gaze down at our resident roo guarding the track to the beach, so close I can almost reach out and touch him. The accommodation might be a bargain, but the chance to get this close and personal to one of our wildlife icons is priceless. Article and images by Lee Atkinson, December 2008.
