Perhaps it’s the way the arms graciously embrace you, or the hourglass form of the seat and back. All I know is that this is a chair you can either sit in or sit and look at. It’s definitely worth a closer look at how it came into existence. The chair is named for it’s designer, Norman Cherner. He was a brilliant architect and industrial designer, teaching at both Columbia University and the Museum of Modern Art.

And, while he’s responsible for innovations in prefabricated housing, he’s probably best known for his iconic and aptly named Cherner armchair. In 1958, a furniture manufacturer named Plycraft approached Cherner to design a chair using molded plywood to compete with other chairs using similar technologies that had come onto the market. Responding to this request, Cherner came up with a design for a chair made of a beech core and a walnut veneer with a sinuously curved armed, however, upon reviewing the design, Plycraft advised Cherner that they would not be putting the chair into production. Not long after being turned down by Plycraft, Cherner found his design for sale in a shop, made by Plycraft, but attributed to another designer. Cherner sought retribution and won, getting paid back royalties while managing to maintain a relationship with Plycraft, who continued to produce the chair into the early 1970’s. After Plycraft ceased production in the early 1970’s, the Cherner Armchair appeared to be destined to become a mid-century footnote in the history of molded plywood engineering and ingenuity.

However, much to the delight of the design community, Cherner’s sons founded the Cherner Chair Company in 1999 to faithfully reproduce their father’s designs as originally intended. Made with a beech plywood core and a walnut veneer, the chair is still made using the original drawings and molds to their father’s exacting specifications.
