It needs to be clean and dry: free from dirt, grease, oil, wax and other surface contaminants. Previously painted surfaces must be stripped of all paint traces before a stain can be applied. You’ll need to follow the instructions on the product you select as application can vary between brands. Where possible, clean your furniture when it is cool or overcast. In hot weather work in sections rinsing the cleaner off before it dries into the furniture. If your furniture has mould, remove as much of it as possible by scraping and using a stiff brush and then apply a mould remover.

Rinse the entire surface with clean water and allow to dry thoroughly. Select a stain that is the colour you want and check if it is suitable for use on outdoor furniture. Make sure you stir the stain thoroughly with a broad, flat stirrer before use as pigment can sit at the base of the can. If you need to use more than one can, it’s a good idea to mix them together as sometimes there can be a slight colour variation between batches. Lay down drop sheets to keep other surfaces clean. Check and follow the recommended instructions on the product you are using before starting as application instructions may vary slightly between brands. As a general rule, apply two coats of stain using a paint brush or speed brush paying particular attention to exposed edges and end grain. Use smooth, even strokes in the same direction. Always apply a second coat within 15 minutes of the first coat while it is still wet. If you wait around the stain will start to dry and then you will have to wait 24 hours to apply a second coat.
