Only problem is they don't provide the full 200 mg of DHA which is recommended for pre-natals, so if you are using for the purpose, you may want to ask your doctor if you should take 2 a day. I opted for this one because it has DHA & EPA (not just DHA since studies show a combination of both is best), and no carrageenan (which I have noticed makes my skin very itchy if I do take). The itchy issue may or may not happen for you - many people are allergic to it but not everyone is, so if you're not, they also have a regular version (not delayed release) of this (Deva Nutrition Vegan DHA-EPA Nutritional Supplement Softgel, 300 mg, 90 Count which gives you more DHA per pill.

I'd rather take 2 pills and not be itchy.Much prefer the non delayed release version of Deva Omega 3I had been taking the non-delayed release version of the Deva Omega 3 vitamins, Deva Nutrition Vegan DHA-EPA Nutritional Supplement Softgel, 300 mg, 90 Count, and had no issues with them. When I went to re-order, I saw these and they are much cheaper. My frugal side came out, and I decided to try these instead. I've been taking them for about a month, and have decided that the switch was a mistake for me. I have two issues with these.1) There is a strong fish smell and taste. I realize it is actually algae, not fish, but I think people are more familiar with what fish smells like.2) They have a relatively large air bubble within the capsule, and that causes it to float when I am trying to swallow them. The capsule actually goes to the top of my mouth, which makes it very had to swallow. Sometimes, it takes two or three swigs of water to get these to actually go down, and that just accentuates the fishy taste.

Next time, I will not take the cheaper way out - just hope to find the other kind on sale. Vitacost Vegan EPA-DHA is a plant-based omega-3 supplement suitable for vegans and vegetarians. This unique, animal product-free formula features two well-known essential fatty acids—DHA and EPA—from life’sOMEGA™, a high-quality marine algal oil delivering the same omega-3 nutrition found in fish oil and krill oil, without animal-derived ingredients. Unlike other plant-based omega-3 options, such as flaxseed (which contains ALA, an essential fatty acid that’s converted to DHA and EPA by the body), this supplement is a superior alternative, supplying DHA and EPA directly in ready-to-use form. It also provides a more sustainable source of omega-3 nutrition than oils obtained from wild-caught fish or krill. What are DHA and EPA? DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) are omega-3 fatty acids required for normal function of many body processes; yet, they can’t be created by the body and must be obtained through diet. While eating fish is considered an ideal way to obtain DHA and EPA, they can also be found in plant sources, such as marine algae, or obtained through the conversion of ALA (found in flaxseed, walnuts, soybeans and some plant oils).

How do DHA and EPA support health? Vitacost nutritional products are manufactured to high standards of quality, efficacy and safety. Each Vitacost product meets or exceeds the standards and requirements set forth in the FDA’s Code of Federal Regulation (21 CFR, 111) Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP). As a dietary supplement for individuals 12 years of age and over, take 2 softgels daily or as directed by a healthcare professional. Keep dry and at room temperature (59°-75°F [15°-24°C]). Milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, crustacean shellfish, fish, fish oil, gluten, titanium dioxide. Do I Have to Eat Fish for Omega-3 Healthy Fats? Did you know that fats, carbohydrates, protein (and alcohol) are the only nutrients in our diet from which we derive energy? Fats contain over twice as many calories per gram as carbohydrates and protein; however some fats are required in our diet as our bodies do not manufacture them on their own. Dietary fats are classified by hydrogenation status, chain length, configuration or placement of double bonds in the fatty acid structure. Fats are oxidized to be used as fuel, help form plasma phospholipids, lipoproteins and cell membranes, and they can be stored as triglycerides. Omega-3 fatty acids are essential polyunsaturated fats with their first double bond three spots from the terminal end of the fatty acid structure. These fats are commonly referred to as oils because they are liquid at room temperature. Many studies on the potential health benefits of omega-3s have been conducted over the last several years. Research suggests that these fats may help support heart health (likely through supporting healthy heart function and efficiency, variability and inflammation status, as well as supporting our lipid numbers).

Some other, more limiting research suggests omega-3 intake may help support mental and cognitive health.* The most widely available types of polyunsaturated fat found in the diet is alpha linolenic acid (ALA). It’s found in chia seeds, flax seeds, canola oil, soybean oil and walnuts. However, ALA must be converted to eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) or docosapentaenoic acid (DHA) in order to be functional. Unfortunately, ALA has a poor conversion rate of about 5-15% to EPA and <1% to DHA; however vegetarians may see a slightly better rate of conversion. Thankfully, DHA and EPA is available from a plant source rather than seafood. You’ll find it in algal oil. Algal oil, or fat derived from marine algae, is the original source of omega-3s that most non-predatorial fish feed upon. Algal oil is available in supplement form, and it’s also added to some enriched foods. Healthy adults should have a diet comprised of 20-35% of calories from fat, with the majority of those being unsaturated fats rather than saturated or trans fats.
