one cupcake, no plate
MelissaAfter close I walk to the shop on Ninth that's still lit and buy one cupcake. No plate. The box sits flat in my palm.
It isn't dessert. It's the only thing in my day nobody handed me.
At the register everything comes from the other side of the counter. Tips. Numbers folded into twenties. Opinions about my hair. I hand back change and one rule.
The cupcake is the part nobody can push across to me. I choose it, I pay for it, I eat it walking home with the streetlights doing the frosting.
People think not sharing it is a quirk. I've watched what sharing does. You hand someone a bite and they say sweet and mean the frosting, and then it's a little bit theirs.
At home I fold the box flat and drop it in the drawer with the other empty ones. Nobody handed me any of them.
