Steam out dents in hardwood flooring. At some point you'll probably drop something and dent your hardwood floor. But you don't have to live with that unsightly dent. Use a trick that woodworkers have been using for years. When wood is dented, fibers in the wood become compressed and stay that way. Steam the dent out with an ordinary iron and a wet cloth to swell fibers back to their normal consistency. It even works on finished wood. Place a drop of water into the dent. Fold a piece of damp cotton cloth four times and place it over the dent. Ensure that the pad is about 1 inch square. Place the tip of a hot iron onto the pad. Move it over the pad in a circular motion until steam begins rising from the cloth. Keep the iron moving. Place a moderate amount of force on the pad as you move the iron. Iron the pad in this manner for about 3 minutes or until the pad becomes dry and the steam dissipates. Remove the iron and the pad. If the dent is not completely removed, place another drop of water into the dent.
Apply the damp cloth and repeat the procedure as many times as needed until the dent is gone. It may take three or four applications to completely remove the dent. Dampen a cloth with Danish oil stain that matches the color of the hardwood floor, if the finish on the floor has turned slightly white from the dent removal. Rub the whitish area with the oil until wet.
