She had a passion for all things medieval; they bought land on which a small 13th-century chapel already stood, and built a bewitching folly using a wide variety of authentic materials. Created as a holiday home in the 1920s for Walter Guinness, later Lord Moyne, Bailiffscourt is tricked out to resemble a grand medieval country mansion.

Mellow Somerset stone and narrow casement windows in the main house enhance the illusion; in addition, there are authentic touches found in the 13th-century chapel and 15th-century oak front door from South Warnborough church. The main house has a warren of cosy interconnecting sitting rooms with antiques, stone fireplaces and tapestries; outside, gorgeous extensive parkland leads to the annex cottages, spa and beach.Lengthy queues for reception (blame the tiny set-aside room off a narrow passageway) – however, the service is generally exemplary, with staff arranging local vineyard tours, nabbing theatre tickets or discounted entry for Arundel Castle. Not that you really need to leave Bailiffscourt to have fun: the first-rate spa, housed in a two-storey authentic-looking barn, has excellent therapists, large pools (both indoor and outdoor) and a gym. The surrounding 30-acre parkland includes a croquet lawn and tennis courts. There are 39 bedrooms arranged over seven buildings, but best bet is to bag a room in the main house – they’re far the most attractive and characterful  – with many featuring grand four-poster beds, wooden beams and broad oak floorboards.

Gorgeous antiques too, spanning old chests to stone fireplaces and tapestries. Bathrooms have roll-top baths, separate power showers and Temple Spa toiletries (the spa majors on Temple Spa treatments and products). That said, the annex rooms are sensitively designed, housed in thatched and stone 'medieval' cottages, and of generous proportions. We offer a price guarantee on every hotel booking Your passport to a better trip Start the evening with a glass of bubbly in one of the cosy sitting rooms before moving to the baronial-feel dining room, resplendent with a dark-oak ceiling and tapestries. Set dinners (£52.50) are pricey for what you get: decent enough choices but nothing really to wow the palate. A roasted quail with Waldorf salad starter was rather ordinary and the cheese-crust cod main, somewhat overcooked. Breakfasts feature a so-so buffet and cooked options that arrived either over or undercooked. A double from £239 in low season; rising to £319 in high.
