During her father's Presidency, Alice attracted worldwide publicity, especially when she married Nicholas Longworth - a White House wedding, touted in its day as the ''wedding of the century.''

But her formal achievements were fairly slender, and if she is still worth writing about it is plainly for what she was, rather than for what she did.

Her most striking single characteristic comes across, here as in earlier accounts, as malice - malice practiced on principle, without any squeamish hesitations. Indeed, in an earlier age she would have risked standing trial as a witch. Having decided that Christianity was ''sheer voodoo,'' she proceeded to dabble in a private voodoo of her own. When her father moved out of the White House, for instance, she buried a ''bad little idol'' in the garden, in the hope that it would bring ill fortune to the new tenants. Watching Woodrow Wilson returning from the Paris Peace Conference, she muttered a curse (''a murrain on him!'') and made the sign of the evil eye.

Still, much of the splendor was simply that of sheer survival. Contemplating the account of her in her final years, I am reminded of a saying attributed to another tough old lady, Diana Cooper: ''First you are young; then you are middle-aged; then you are old; then you are wonderful.''
