Levin Furniture respects your privacy and will not share this information with anyone. It might be your mattress, and what better day than World Sleep Day to consider a spruce up of the most important element of your bed, or maybe even invest in a new one? Sleep quality is just as essential as the amount of shut-eye that we get, and this is something that could be compromised if you are sleeping on a mattress that isn’t suited to your body type or may need replacing. As World Sleep Day is today, we asked Rebecca Maloy, Bed Buyer at Furniture Village for some top tips on how to on how to choose a new bed, and how to ensure it stays in prime condition. Rebecca says: "My main piece of advice when it comes to buying a mattress is try before you buy. This isn’t a decision that should be rushed. "Think of it like buying a pair of new shoes. If the shoes don’t fit, you try on the next size; or try on a more comfortable alternative. Set a whole day aside to visit a bed retailer and test out a variety of different mattresses.

"Quite often I hear customers requesting a hard mattress as they have a bad back, or other ailments, but actually a hard mattress can put more pressure on joints, which will exacerbate rather than alleviate the issue. When you arrive at the store, speak to a member of staff who can offer advice on mattress density and try to match you with mattresses suitable to your requirements. The next step is then to try out the suggested mattresses. Spend as much time as you need laying on your chosen bed to get a feel for it. Rebecca adds: "Your bed is an investment - we spend a third of our lives in our bed so it’s important to choose the right one. As a rule, the best position in which to sleep is on your back with your neck, middle and lower back completely aligned, and your ankles slightly elevated. Be sure to assume this position when testing out any mattress." Once you have chosen the mattress that works best for you, you then need to consider your bed frame. Rebecca advises that: "Generally the frame is purely aesthetic and choosing one is simply a matter of taste, however it is important to consider how the frame will complement the mattress. "

For example, memory foam mattresses are better supported by a solid base as the foam may slip between the gaps of a slatted base. A sprung mattress however, will benefit from a slatted base and is great for back support." You also need to think about how the bed will work within your room. If space is an issue a divan is great as they often come with storage underneath. If space isn’t an issue, you have the option to introduce an oversized statement bed, making it the focal point of the room. MORE: Have a soak in an award-winning bath made of cork A bed really is an investment, and if you choose wisely it should last for many years. Rebecca says: "You really can’t put a price on your wellbeing. If cost is an issue, look to the sales for a bargain. If a compromise must be made, invest more in the mattress than the frame as the frame can always be replaced at a later date." People typically change their bed sheets every 7-14 day, but quite often we overlook our mattresses. When you change the covers, vacuum the mattress to refresh it and remove any dust that may have accumulated.
