My old mattress had springs and I noticed I was having rib pain all the time on both sides of my body. I eventually wondered if it was my old mattress that was hurting me, as I am a side-sleeper. I bought this and although the problem is not completely gone, I have far fewer complaints of rib pain. Regarding the smell, it is not necessarily a disgusting smell.
