GEORGETOWN — Mattresses R Us in Georgetown is only two weeks old, but according to general manager Jamie Coburn, business is booming. After holding a soft opening, Coburn, his family, and Mattresses R Us welcomed the Brown County Chamber of Commerce for a grand opening on Friday, Sept/ 11. “It’s been tremendous,” Coburn said of business so far. “We’re just absolutely amazed at how much business and support we’ve been getting. Not just from Georgetown but from all the communities. We’re getting a lot of people in already.” Coburn, who is a part-time police officer with the village of Georgetown and a manager with Fujitec America in Cincinnati, was encouraged to open the new mattress store by a friend of his in Kentucky who runs one as well. “I wanted to do something with my family, and I’ve got a dear friend (Jackie Johnson) in Somerset, Kentucky that’s been in the business for 25 years, and he offered to help us,” Coburn said. “We thought there was a need for it in this area, since the large one closed in Mt. Orab a few years back.
So far it’s been great.” Coburn said later that he doubled his two-week sales goal in just one week. As Coburn mentioned, it’s a family operation at the business. His daughter Kristen is set to run the store full time, with Coburn splitting time between Georgetown and Fujitec, and his sons will help deliver the beds to the customers. “It’s another business that’s opened up in an existing building in town,” Brown County Commissioner Barry Woodruff said. “Things are starting to be positive for Georgetown, and whatever’s good for Georgetown is good for the county.” Georgetown Mayor Dale Cahall agreed that it was an exciting moment for the village. “Of course every business is important in the village,” Cahall said. “Any time when there can be new people opening up businesses is always exciting.” /wp-content/uploads/2015/09/web1_MattressGrandOpening1-DanielKarell-.jpgThe Brown County Chamber of Commerce held a grand opening outside of Mattresses R Us in Georgetown on September 11.

End of an era for one furniture store But now, there are three and by the end of November, two will be left as the owner of the store in downtown Monterey announced that he is closing up shop after 68 years. “This store opened April 1, 1948,” Mark Simpson, third generation owner, said. “Nov. 30 will be the last day.” The chain was started by Arlie Lay and Virgil Simpson in 1920 who opened stores in Jamestown, Celina, Oneida, Livingston, and other small towns.
Remaining stores, in addition to Monterey, are in Albany and Somerset, Ky. The Monterey store was operated by Denver Garrett who left a few years later and began his own business. Clayton Choate then ran the store until 1979 when Mark’s father, Charles Simpson, took over. Mark then took over in 1990. “I have some really good memories here,” he said. “This is the only job I’ve had.” The store has always been a furniture and appliance dealer, with a majority of the furniture being American made. “The thing that kept us going all these years was in-house financing,” Simpson said. “You buy here, you pay here. We kept it all in-house.” Over the years, he has seen a lot of customers come through, many who have become good friends and as close as family. The building the store is housed in has seen a few changes throughout the years — mainly to the front facade — but the inside is the same. “It’ll be different, not having the store here, but it’ll be a new chapter,” Simpson said.
