Do you have extra mattresses or box springs at your home? Don’t throw them away, recycle those mattresses at Goodwill of Silicon Valley! While mattresses are not commonly recycled, Goodwill's mattress recycling program recycles over 90% of mattress materials. In 2016, Goodwill of Silicon Valley accepted and diverted over 40,000 mattresses from landfill. Goodwill's mattress recycling program creates jobs for veterans struggling with homelessness, unemployment, and substance abuse. In 2016, Goodwill served over 150 veterans and successfully placed 75 of those veterans into full-time jobs. Goodwill started this program in association with the City of San Jose and US Department of Labor, to provide jobs for Veterans who might struggle finding employment elsewhere. In 2015, Goodwill of Silicon Valley became a state certified mattress recycling facility. You can drop-off old mattresses and/or box springs at any Goodwill retail store for a $20 fee per item. You can also drop-off old mattresses and/or box springs for FREE at our main plant (at 1080 North 7th St. in San Jose) between 7:30am until 3pm.

Our landfills don’t need more of our stuff, particularly things that can have a second life in the hands of someone else. Before you let the deliverymen haul off your old bed and mattress, find out if they’re just going to be dumping them. You may even find a charity in your area that will come pick up your old bed from your doorstep. Please ensure that your bed and mattress are in good condition. Please do not donate broken, stained, or unsanitary beds and mattresses. And please take care to tell the charity whether the items were in a home with pets or smokers, as people in fragile health can be extremely sensitive to pet hair and cigarette smoke.

Goodwill is a part of Dell Reconnect, a program that makes getting rid of old technology easy and free. Simply pack your old computer equipment into the car with other household donations and drop it off at a participating Goodwill location where the trained staff will inspect each item and determine whether to reuse, refurbish, or recycle it. Items We Cannot Accept It's hard to say "no thank you" to a donation when those donations help to fund Goodwill programs. However, we do need to refuse some items for being non-recyclable or containing hazardous materials. Other times, the item must be refused because it costs more to transport, repair or refurbish than it can be sold for in our stores. Our donation attendants are trained to know what we can and cannot accept, and will help guide you to other possibilities for donations we cannot use. We cannot accept the following items: CRT and DLP TVs, or rear-projection flat screen HDTVs No household chemical products such as pesticides, paint, paint thinner, drain cleaner, oven cleaner, aerosols and other environmentally-unfriendly waste products.
No automotive hazardous waste such as tires, lead acid batteries, additives, gasoline, oils, antifreeze, etc. No large appliances such as refrigerators, freezers, stoves/ovens, washers/dryers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, furnaces, microwaves, trash compactors, water heaters, large console stereos, freon-based appliances, etc. No personal care items such as shampoo, conditioner, nail polish remover, shaving cream, hairsprays, shavers, curling irons No mattresses/box springs, including waterbed mattresses and waterbed frames No carpet or carpet padding No plumbing fixtures or building materials No traditional recyclables such as glass, newsprint, office paper, cardboard, plastics, magazines, junk mail, etc. No weapons such as guns, bows and arrows, ammunition, hunting knives, etc. No cribs, car seats, walkers or other products that do not meet the current safety standards of the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, including recalled items.
