Originally from Bladenboro, Freeman said his first job was at a barbershop in Lumberton. He is celebrating his return to the area with “homecoming discounts” on stock in the store. The next big sale will be for Labor Day. Working with Freeman is Dave Davis, manager on duty. Freeman said he is interviewing for two more employees. The new Mattress Firm occupies 5,404 square-feet of the former Office Depot space, which has been converted into three spaces since the office supply store was shuttered Jan. 23 as part of a company-wide consolidation. The Lumberton Office Depot was one of almost 400 stores closed by the company since 2014. Mattress Firm sells adjustable beds, furniture and mattresses. The Texas-based retailer offers several financing options, including a 48-month plan and a 90-day payment option. There are more than 2,100 Mattress Firm locations across the U.S. Panera Bread will set up shop inside a 4,297 square-foot section of the building, and the company has begun advertising employment opportunities for cashiers and day-shift and night-shift bread bakers.
“We are aiming to open our new bakery-cafe in Lumberton on Sept. 20,” spokesperson Amanda Cardosi said in an email on Monday. Panera Bread offers soups, salads, sandwiches and pasta, but the bakery-style restaurant is perhaps best known for its pastries and sweets.
