Ella Fitzgerald The woman who was perhaps the nation's greatest jazz and pop artist began singing by accident, as legend has it. When Ella was fifteen years old, she appeared as a contestant in a talent competition intending to dance. Her knees shook too much, and so she sang instead - and was heard by a musician in the famed Chick Webb Band.
Ella Fitzgerald loved to read and she loved kids. We think this program is a fitting tribute to that love and the fruits of her music career. And speaking of her career, I also work surrounded by photographs and archival images of the legendary Ella Fitzgerald, the bright-eyed diva dressed for the spotlight in elegant furs and flowing gowns.
