All the monthly builds you can't get off the lego site anymore are on this blog! It would be tough to find a car that evokes such strong feelings of retro-nostalgia as the OG Volkswagen Beetle. It’s as ’60s as hippie communes or tie-dye, and since finding one in person is a task of Herculean proportions, LEGO has decided to make it easy on all of us, releasing a painstaking recreation of the car in a new Creator set.

Comprised of 1,167 pieces, the LEGO VW Beetle comes in the classic azure-blue color scheme and is ornamented with various surfing accessories for all your beach vacation dreams left unrealized. Despite being made from bricks, the LEGO car has many of the same working functions as the auto on which it was based, such as seats that tilt forward and backward, a moving steering wheel and a trunk with a 4-cylinder engine inside. Also included is a set of license plate and VW logo stickers. The LEGO VW Beetle is priced at $99 and will be hitting stores (including online) on August 1. Yes, we're always geeked when LEGO builds a new car model. This new model is of an old model, of course: the Type 1 Volkswagen Beetle. It has a '60s theme that includes a surfboard for the roof rack and period-correct hubcaps. LEGO Creator Expert set 10252 has 1,167 pieces and measures 11 inches high, 10 inches long, and four inches wide. The roof lifts off to reveal a beige brick interior with movable seats, and the doors, hood, and trunk all open. There's a spare tire in the frunk and you can see a little air-cooled four in back. The set comes with decals that give the builder a choice of four license plates, including a surfer-appropriate California design and one from Wolfsburg, Germany, where the car was born. The surf stickers on the rear window are a nice touch, too. Nerds like me will recall that is not the first LEGO Beetle model. Set 10187 was a much brickier take on the very rounded German car, both in form and number of pieces. In fact, the LEGO designers made a new curved piece for the bumpers on this car to get the fenders to look right.

(More on that in the video above.) The blocky two-tone Sculpture model was released in 2008 and used 1,626 pieces; it was also a goog deal larger than this one. Sealed boxes of that set are rare one and sell for about $500 on the 'net right now, although they may see residual values drop once this new interpretation hits the market. The cute blue Bug goes on sale August 1 and will retail for $99.99. The LEGO Creator Volkswagen Beetle (10252) will be out there very soon, but Gerald Cacas already build the ‚VW Käfer‘. Okay, a tiny version of it. Gerald was kind enough, to answer a few questions. His MOC is fantastic. You have seen the new Beetle – and thought, there should be a tiny version of it, too? And my answer is… no! Just kidding… well, yes of course! I really hope they will create a smaller version as an Creator set as well. Could you tell us a little bit about the building process? Actually, I have an existing Red Beetle MOC already.

So I thought, why not built a blue version, which is similar to the new Beetle (10252). But my medium azure bricks are limited, so I needed to redesign the whole thing from scratch. 1. The truck must be able to open and should have the spare tire 2. The headlight must be rounded and be rediciously big to make it more cute… 3. The hood must be accessible and at least should have an engine 4. The roof must be removable, and must have the flat brown space for the surf board and the ice box 5. Lastly is the tan interior, and almost forgot, the mud guard as wellGreat details – for such a tiny version of the new Beetle. Please check out Geralds Flickr site. Yes, there's a gaping Beetle-shaped hole in your life, and only this Lego set can fill it. Granted, the 1167-piece Beetle that Lego just announced is going to cost you—the set is $99.99 in the U.S.—but just look at it.

Who cares about a little thing called money? With the car, you get four different license plates to choose from, a cooler, a surfboard, a roof rack, and a tiny beach towel. Plus, not only do the doors open, the trunk does, too. And inside, there's an engine exactly where it's supposed to be.As you might imagine, with more than 1000 pieces, this Beetle is pretty big. It's 10 inches long and 11 inches tall (with the roof rack). Whether you're buying it for your kid or for yourself, the Lego VW Beetle goes on sale August 1.Sign up for the Road & Track Newsletter Autorama Dukes of Hazzard Jump Was Historically Accurate, Right Down to the Crash Landing Cars 3 Will be Lightning McQueen's Fight Against the Future Top Gear Season 24 Premiers March 12th on BBC America An M5-Sourced V8 Turns This Van Into Quite the Drift Machine Take a First-Person Ride on the World's Trippiest Hot Wheels Track Tanner Foust Rips Up a Mountain Road In His Global Rallycross Beetle
