A jogabilidade mantém o que é visto em outros jogos da série LEGO. Se você já jogou um, sabe que eles envolvem muita resolução de quebra-cabeças simples ao longo das fases, montagem e destruição de peças e ainda um pouco de pancadaria entre os personagens e os inimigos que surgem, mas sempre de forma estilizada e sem violência clara.
O modo multiplayer também está presente e continua como um dos pontos mais interessantes do jogo. Até dois participantes podem cooperar nas fases e controlar dois personagens ao mesmo tempo. Um vai ajudar o outro a resolver os quebra-cabeças e também a combater os inimigos que aparecerem. Diversos momentos icônicos dos filmes estão representados durante a aventura, além de cenários que você vai reconhecer assim que ver, se for um grande fã. Os Trolls, Orcs, Goblins e outras criaturas das trevas estão presentes, enquanto cruzamos locais como o Condado, pântanos, cidades de elfos e mais.
