Technobubble covers games, gadgets, technology and all things geek. Follow Technobubble poobah Jason Hidalgo’s shenanigans on Twitter @jasonhidalgoIn the longstanding battle between the Jedi and the Sith, things coming full circle is a common theme. As such, it’s only fitting how the franchise that launched the LEGO line of Traveller’s Tales games is now adding new life to a gaming series that was starting to feel a bit long in the tooth for several of its last few games. When “LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game” first came out in 2005, I remember folks young and old raving to me about the game. There was just something about combining Star Wars and LEGO that was absolutely magical, allowing the game to bridge generations.Several LEGO games and various properties later, however, the game started evoking a paint-by-the-numbers feel. The core gameplay mixing action with platforming and a dash of building was still solid. Even as the themes and characters changed from hobbits and ninjas to superheroes and dinosaurs, though, some of the games just didn’t have that sense of newness that the early titles used to have.
Enter “LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” From the very beginning, something just felt different about this entry. It actually seemed more exciting, like I was playing a game because I wanted to not because I had to — the latter feeling being something I certainly run into frequently as someone who reviews games.Part of it is how Star Wars seems just perfect for TT’s LEGO gaming formula. Traveller’s Tales should be commended for doing a great job in incorporating the Star Wars story into the game, which helps keep things more interesting. In addition to homages to the movie as well as the trademark goofy additions that has since become the mark of a TT LEGO game, LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens features nicely designed set pieces that make for a more compelling gameplay experience. Whether you’re blazing through the Death “It’s a Trap” Star in the Millennium Falcon or running roughshod through Endor in an Imperial AT-ST Walker, such touches help spice up the bread-and-butter combat that the series is known for by adding some geek-worthy moments to the gameplay.

One problem with past games in the series is how they all feel the same to a fault. By adding new elements, however, the game feels a bit more fresh so you’re not going through the same song-and-dance as before. Granted, the cover shooting isn’t quite as elegant as, say, Gears of War, but it’s a good start. Even building segments now give you options to create different contraptions adding some decision making to the process instead of just building one thing with each pile. In some cases, you even need to break down something you’ve built after using it in order to open a path by building something else. In addition to puzzles that exercise your brain muscles, finding gold bricks also unlock secret chapters that further flesh out the story.
Throw everything together complete with the series’ familiar allocation of various characters with different skills and you’ve got a more solid gaming experience. Not that LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens doesn’t have its share of issues. As with many LEGO games before it, this one has its share of glitches, including familiar ones like characters getting stuck. I’m not sure why this continues to be an issue but it is and can pour cold water on an otherwise fun experience. Online play also remains absent.Still, the game is a blast, overall, especially when playing with another player via couch co-op. If you’ve skipped the last few LEGO game installments because they were starting to feel the same, LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens just might get you back on board the series once again.Like Darth Vader and Obi Wan Kenobi, things come full circle as the property that started it all serves up one of the more enjoyable entries in Traveller’s Tales’ ongoing LEGO franchise. Admittedly, some annoying glitches scuttle the experience at times.
