Lego Star Wars Fan site From Bricks to Bothans recently held a contest that tasked users with picking vehicles and starships from the Star Wars universe and re-imagining them as Steampunk Lego creations - and the results were pretty goddamn magnificent. Like the grand winner of the contest above, the Steampunk Millennium Falcon by Markus1984, the models are all beautifully textured and very detailed, and marry the concepts of Iconic Star Wars imagery and the Steampunk aesthetic really well. There's something about seeing AT-ATs, T-16's and TIE Bombers covered in spokes and gears that's really rather wonderful. Here's some of the coolest contest entries: Obi-Wan Kenobi's Jedi Starfighter and Hyperdrive Ring, by Legols Steampunk TIE Bomber, by Markus1984 The All Terrain Aristocratic Traveler, by Moriartus And you can see plenty more over at From Bricks to Bothans at the link below. You're reading Toybox, io9's new blog for all things pop culture. LEGO website FBTB runs a few contests throughout the year, and one of the most popular ones involves steampunk. The first Steam Wars competition was held in 2008, and it challenged participants to choose any vehicle from the Star Wars universe and build it from LEGO with some steampunk flair. The entries were brick masterpieces, and FBTB came back this year with the Steam Wars Returns. The MOC (my own creation) contest ended last month, and it had five rounds. Entrants didn’t have to come up with just one original piece, they had to design and build five vehicles. It gets crazier because they only had about seven days to build for each round. I’m tired just reading that. Categories included starfighters, speeders, walkers, enemy starfighters, and a wild card. Builders were eliminated from each round, March Madness style. This is serious business. LEGO builder markus1984 took first place with this stunning Millennium Falcon: That color palette makes it look like it belongs in a Victorian steampunk tale set on Tatooine.

Ooh, could that be one of the spinoffs? Markus1984 built the ship over six days in about 50 hours. The coolest part about the design is that it looks as though the top flips up to reveal a deck with a pirate ship vibe. It’s covered in details including barrels, a table and chair with food, water, and plenty of propellers. Sorry Han, but this builder made your hunk of junk more beautiful. See more of the sexy ship in the gallery and a bonus steampunk TIE bomber: See the other winners at FBTB.Even if you’re not a fan of Steampunk, it’s hard not to be totally blown away by this amazing build. The steam-powered Imperial Destroyer is “hunting the Tantive VII through the endless deserts of Tatooine.” And it just took 10 days to build. KW Vauban posted this rad creation on MocPages and it’s just amazing he built this in just 10 days, especially when you see how much detail he put in. Lego fans have been creating Steampunk-themed Star Wars builds for a while now, but it’s always fun to see how a new MOC will incorporate the style.

You’ll notice the brown and gold pieces, that’s a pretty essential Steampunk color scheme. Also, barrels are used for the engines. Again, the detail just blew me away. And these vignettes from the film on the side of the build. See even more amazing pics of this build over at MocPages. You’re reading Leg Godt, the blog with the latest Lego news and the best sets in the web. That and a collective geekgasm. Truth is, as fun as the official Star Wars LEGO models are, home-made models like this steampunk TIE Fighter have a charm that the former can't achieve. The most amazing thing, however, is the source of inspiration for some of these:

The fascinating illustrations above, some of them extremely good, come from a thread titled "Star Wars: Steampunk" at the CGSociety forums. They were part of the inspiration for models like this X-Wing, which is one of the entries of the Steam-Wars contest being held at From Bricks to Bothan forums, a place dedicated to LEGO Star Wars enthusiasts. But as nice the Alliance star fighter is, I think the reconstruction of the TIE Fighter definitely beats it in terms of design and sheer steampunking: Although I'm sure some of you will disagree. So,[CG Society Forums, FBTB Forums and Star Wars contest The Brothers Brick]A week or two ago someone sent a tip about the LEGO Star Wars Steampunk contest, and I forgot all about it. So whoever that was let me know, and I'll give you the proper credit you're due. Anyways, there's a contest going on over at the FTBD (From Bricks to Bothans) forums until the end of the month where you steampunkify a vehicle from Star Wars and post it for judging.

The entries have been rolling in, and some of the creations are absolutely ridiculous. These people have got some serious imaginations and LEGO building talent. It's weird how that works -- some people are good at some things and others are good at other things. Like these people are great at constructing wicked steampunk Star Wars vehicles, and I'm good at, well, sucking at life. Hit the jump for a bunch more vehicles and make sure to check out the link to the contest page for all the bad-assness.
