It’s a wild, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (or, for us Disney fans, The Lion King 1 & ½)-style take on the Star Wars saga, with stuffy protocol droid C-3PO (voiced, once again, by series stalwart Anthony Daniels) and fiery astromech droid R2-D2, as they retell the entire series of films from their perspective. It’s positively dizzying in its wonderfulness and, we think, the perfect jumping off point for any Disney fans new to Star Wars, who are interested in submerging themselves in the series before Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens in December (and becomes pretty much the only thing anybody can talk about). Even if you don’t have a working knowledge of moisture evaporators or power couplings, you’ve probably played with Lego building blocks while growing up.
(If you haven’t watched Star Wars OR played with Lego building blocks, then chances are that you grew up in one of the outer rim territories.) And it’s playing with Legos that makes the series even more relatable – while watching, you can totally see yourself playing with the little plastic bits that make up this world. Consider this: Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace has a running time of two hours and 16 minutes. Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones runs a cool two hours and 22 minutes. Yet the plots of boths are covered in the first episode of Lego Star Wars: Droid Tales, clocking in at 22 minutes. 3. It’ll Lead You to Find Out More And what will you do with all that extra time? Why, you’ll probably look into more of the Star Wars universe. Lego Star Wars: Droid Tales is tantalizing and engaging and really makes you (especially if you’re not intimately aware of the world and characters) want to dig into the world in a richer and more meaningful way.
Lego Star Wars is cute. Like really, really cute. And this has a lot of super-cute flourishes, whether it’s the slumbering Ewoks at the beginning of the episode or the way that Jar Jar Binks gets continually disposed of. It’s so cute, in fact, that more grisly elements of the movie become even cuddlier. 5. It’s Easy to Figure Out Maybe the most daunting thing about watching a Star Wars-related television series, without that Star Wars super-fandom, is being able to figure it out. And trust us, this is very easy to follow, especially if you have a basic understand of the characters and universe (which, like we said, is pretty much a given). 6. It’s Self-Referential, In A Non-Exclusive Way One of our very favorite things about Lego Star Wars: Droid Tales is how funny it is. It’s that rambunctious, self-referential humor that fans of the Lego series of videogames and TV specials will instantly recognize. And it’s not exclusive, either. There are a bunch of jokes about how the prequels’ narratives are hard to follow (“She was no longer a queen, having been promoted to senator …
I don’t understand that either”, goes a bit of C3PO narration) and little gags like Watto selling red flags in the background of the scene where we first encounter future-Darth Vader, Anakin Skywalker. It’s cute and fun and super smart and, unlike those prequels, very easy to follow. 7. It’ll Make You Even More Excited About Star Wars: The Force Awakens Pretty much anything Star Wars-related makes us even more jazzed about Star Wars: The Force Awakens (opening in December). But when a series is this good and this fun and captures this much of the old school Star Wars flavor, it will leave you positively itchy for the new film.
