Spider-Man 2 was the last subtheme of LEGO Spider-Man, released in 2004 as a continuation of Spider-Man 1. Spider-Man (4 Plus), a 4+ Spider-Man theme, was also released at the same year. The sets are based on the movie of the same name. it was the last subtheme of LEGO Spider-Man. Spider-ManAmbulance DriverHarry OsbornHarry (Grey Suit)Highway PatrolmanAunt MayJ. The theme was first introduced in 2002 as a sub-brand of the Lego Studios theme, to tie in with the release of the first Spider-Man film. Three new sets were released in 2003, this time without the Lego Studios branding. In 2004, 7 new sets were introduced, to tie-in with the Spider-Man 2 movie. After this, the line was discontinued, and the rights to the third film in the series Spider-Man 3 were sold instead to rival company MEGA Brands, resulting in a Spider-Man 3 range of the Mega Bloks toy.
However, in 2012 LEGO released a set based on the Ultimate Spider-Man animated series in their Marvel Superheroes line. The two sets that were part of the Lego 4+ range were Doc Ock's Crime Spree (4858) and Doc Ock's Cafe Attack (4860). The former included a helicopter, two motorbikes and a ramp, whilst the latter featured a cafe facade and a yellow car. Both sets included figures that were larger than the traditional minifig scale, with more points of articulation. Also combined sets with the Lego Studio sets and a few Lego Spider-Man 2 sets. After 2004, no new Lego Spider-Man sets were released, despite the release of the third film in the franchise, Spider-Man 3. Instead, rival toy company MEGA Brands, who produce the Lego-compatible product Mega Bloks, entered into a multi-year licensing deal with Marvel Enterprises, giving them the rights to produce 'playsets, vehicles and other building-themed products' based upon Spider-Man, X-Men, Fantastic Four, Hulk, Captain America, Daredevil, Silver Surfer, Punisher, Blade and Namor.
[1] It is unknown whether Lego intended to discontinue the Spider-Man license or were out-bid. Spider-Man returned in the Marvel sub-theme Lego Super Heroes. The Lego sets are based the Ultimate Spider-Man series. The first Lego set in the series called "Spider-Man's Doc Ock Ambush" was released in Summer 2012. It was a full line of sets featuring characters from the first two Spider-Man movies. In 2002, Spider-Man at first was a sub-theme of Studios, and concentrated on creating a Spider-Man movie with LEGO, instead of the actual story of the films. Later, in 2003, the sets were no longer part of the Studios theme, and focused on recreating the movie events from the first film with LEGO, like the majority of movie based LEGO sets.
In 2004, the Spider-Man 2 subtheme was released, and then the theme was discontinued. Spider-Man (4 Plus), a 4+ Spider-Man theme, was also released during the same year. In 2012, the Spider-Man theme returned as part of the Marvel subtheme of Super Heroes. Unlike the 2002-2004 movie-based Spider-Man series, the Super Heroes Spider-Man sets are based off of the TV series Ultimate Spider-Man. Currently the new sets bare no resemblance to the previous theme and so far only Spider-Man, Doc Ock, J. Jonah Jameson, Green Goblin and Mary Jane Watson have been redesigned. If your hunger for more information about the movie can't be contained any longer, worry not, we might have some new juicy details, thanks to a #Lego set. Instagram user delta.customs posted a picture last week revealing two Lego sets inspired by Homecoming. The post contains this caption: "To finish all of my leaks, for the summer sets! EDIT: There are only TWO Spider-Man: Homecoming sets!" Keep in mind, Lego sets are not always 100% accurate when it comes to spoilers, but they have a pretty good track record of giving details to us and the ones listed in the post describe very specific situations.
So, let's break down what these two sets can mean for #SpiderManHomecoming. What does the set contain? It's a bit hard to interpret the two robbers having "Avengers in their names" but it seems to indicate that the criminals gave themselves Avengers titles. The #MCU has been dealing with the ramifications of superheroes living in the real world for a long time so it's not surprising that even criminals are using them as inspiration, something we saw in the one-shot Item 47: What does get me excited about this is how closely it connects Homecoming to the rest of the universe (you know, in case #IronMan himself co-starring wasn't enough). If this is a scene in the film, I'm sure we'll get a few Civil War references. This was the biggest surprise to me, as the description implies there will be a two-way team-up of heroes and bad guys with Shocker being part of it. Previous rumors stated that Herman Schultz would have a small role in the story and even Jon Watts seemed to tease that through Instagram.
But going by this description, he'll have a much larger role, possibly in the final battle. If that is indeed the case, #JonWatts and other people in charge will have to handle a villain team-up very carefully, after not-so-great reception from fans in Spider-Man 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The other thing is #TonyStark, who, according to this Lego set, will be putting on his iconic armor at some point in the movie (which we all kinda already knew). At first, I thought the hero would appear briefly in order to give Spidey the spotlight but this implies ol' Shellhead will help our young Wall-crawler in his fight against Vulture... because, why else would you have Shocker, Iron Man, Vulture and Spider-Man if not for an all-out, incredible super-powered brawl? What I would prefer, though, is to allow #Spidey to fight his villains all by himself, as him defeating powerful adversaries on his own thanks to his skill is a big part of the comics. However, these scenes sound really cool, so even though I'd prefer #SpiderMan to battle the villains in the film alone, I can't deny the joy I'd feel seeing what these sets promise brought to life.
