Undoubtedly you’ve noticed from our weekend posts that Toy Fair New York began on Saturday, and we were there in person to bring you coverage of LEGO’s latest news. This year I had the pleasure of attending as the representative from The Brothers Brick, tasked with the oh-so-onerous duties of getting a hands-on look at new LEGO sets months in advance of their release and bringing our readers photographs of them. Who will win is anyone’s guess as these delightful poseable figures go brick head to brick head. Featuring fantastic custom LEGO minifig capes, these custom BrickHeadz designed by Kale Frost are simply brilliant!
The scene pits two of DC’s most popular superheroes against each other in a friendly game, as these characters battle it out across the table. Judging by the pieces left on the Chess board, it looks like Superman is losing pieces faster than a speeding bullet. See more of these superheroes What killed the dinosaurs? Whether you love him for his puns or hate him for the same reason, Mr. Freeze is an excellent counterpoint to the broody Bat of Gotham. So buckle up readers and get nostalgic for icy puns because it’s time to review Mr. Freeze Ice Attack (Set 70901). This set retails for $19.99 and has 201 pieces. Based on LEGO’s standard pricing of $0.10 per piece, this price tag is pretty much spot on. It comes with three minifigs (Batman, Mr. Freeze, and a Security Guard), Mr. Freeze’s Exosuit, a power plant console, and a minifig-sized chunk of ice. Interestingly, this set combines with two other new Batman sets: 70900 The Joker Balloon Escape and 70910 Scarecrow Special Delivery.
The end result is a mega-set that looks like the power station from the opening scene of the LEGO Batman Movie. If 1960s Classic TV Robin saw this build, he’d say the same thing! Batman fan Havoc has done a beautiful sculpt of the Caped Crusader. I particularly like how Batman’s pointed ears are made from 16×4 Triple Curved Wedges. It gives Batman a pointed, sharp, brooding look that fits his persona.
Quickly Robin, to the Batmobile! The LEGO Batman Movie opens today and we enjoyed it, though not without a few reservations (read our review). LEGO is naturally pulling out all the stops to advertise the film, and that includes giving away free Batman minifigures and now, revealing a brand new set. Today we get our first look at 70917 The Ultimate Batmobile, which is a huge vehicle that splits into four smaller vehicles: the Batmobile, Batwing, Bat-Tank, and Batcycle. The Ultimate Batmobile will be available June 1 for $129.99 USD. It also includes a light-up Batsignal, and Batman, Robin, Batgirl, Polka-Dot Man on a flying disc, Alfred Pennyworth (in Batsuit), the Wicked Witch of the West, and two Flying Monkeys. The set, 30607 Disco Batman/Tears of Batman is available free with the purchases $75 of more in LEGO stores and the LEGO Shop Online. The promo begins today, Feb. 10, and runs through Feb. 28 or while supplies last. LEGO is also giving away posters of various characters from The LEGO Batman Movie with orders. Disco Batman includes an exclusive torso print, while the pearl gold Bat-cowl and flashy two-tone cape are only available otherwise in the huge Batcave Break-in set. The Tears of Batman minifigure will net you an exclusive red Bat-cowl and green cape. Of course, the torso is also exclusive. Coinciding with the release of The LEGO Batman Movie, which we reviewed recently, Amazon has discounted some of the movie tie-in sets. The following five sets are all at least 10% off. The story goes that Alfred was shocked to learn that Master Bruce accepted a role in a new LEGO movie. And since then, Batman has been doing some alternative training in his new secret “creativity” training room, supposedly building miniatures of his own vehicles and various other related themes.
