The Lego Boost kit lets kids build five different smart toy models, including a cat, robot and guitar, with the help of sensors and motors. The move follows the success of Lego's Mindstorms robotics kits, which are often used in computer science classes. Last year, Lego launched the WeDo 2.0 robotics kit to teach science and tech concepts to elementary students. But its latest effort is all about coding for consumers, rather than a focus on education. The Boost kit comes with a Move Hub -- a Lego brick with a tilt sensor -- to power the Lego creations. Special bricks with a motor and sensors gauge surrounding colors and the distance from objects in its path.

Users will need to download a corresponding app featuring 60 coding activities. Kids can also add voice recordings via the app to give toys the ability to speak. In addition, the app teaches kids how to "boost" Lego creations. Once they understand how the toy's sensors work, it's encouraged to build bases and add them to any creation. This means they can make their favorite dragon walk or rovers drive. The kit, designed for builders ages 7 and older, will be available later this year for $160. The announcement comes as more companies incorporate coding technology into toys, from programmable robots to friendship bracelets that vibrate with secret messages. At CES in Las Vegas this week, Lego revealed a new playset that teaches children to code using their own Lego creations and a smartphone app. The kit, called Lego Boost, isn't the first programming-centric line the company has rolled out, but Boost is the first to focus on making coding both accessible and fun for younger kids.

Different efforts like Girls Make Games and the Hour of Code have emphasized ways to explore and teach programming to younger generations, and Lego Boost is no different. However simple, tools like this can help younger kids develop an early understanding of basic coding, and can provide a strong foundation for the next generation of game developers. Kids are able to create one of five Lego robots using the Boost set, each with a different look and unique functions. Specialized blocks within the kit sync up to the Boost app via Bluetooth and allow players to control and create tasks for each of the different bots. Basic commands within the app are broken down into categories for movement, speech, and action. Players are able to drag and connect commands to create functions for connected bots. This allows young kids to program their creations to do anything from basic movements to more complex tasks that make use of sensors that read color or sound. “We know that children dream of bringing their Lego creations to life, and our chief ambition for Lego Boost is to fulfill that wish.

Once children build a Lego creation, we give them simple coding tools to ‘boost’ their models by adding personality,” said Lego Group design lead Simon Kent. “We want children to first and foremost have a fun and limitless play experience; adding the coding opportunity is the means to get there.” Check out our 2 cheats & codes for The LEGO Movie Videogame. Lego Boost combines building blocks with sensors, motors and app control to let kids build a variety of robots that can respond to stimulii. The Boost kit is controlled by the Move Hub, a special Lego brick with a tilt sensor and a selection of connections for the included motors and visual/color sensor. The Move hub communicates with a smartphone or tablet running the Boost app, which determines how the hub and its connected devices behave. The kit and app provide instructions for building five different robotics projects, including a Short Circuit-like robot, a cat, a vehicle, a guitar and even a 3D printer. The robot, cat and vehicle all seem like fairly standard projects for electronic building block kits like Boost, and versions have been seen in Lego's more complex Mindstorms robotics kits. The guitar shows off unique potential with the visual/color sensor, responding to colored bricks on the fret to signal the connected mobile device to produce different tones. The 3D printer is even more unique, assembling its own Lego creations using a simple conveyor belt and hopper assembly.

Boost creations are programmed using a variety of interconnecting blocks in the Boost app. The system is similar to Lego Mindstorms programming, but with a simpler interface targeting younger users. It still provides logic functions for use with input from the kit's sensors and output from the motors and the connected mobile device's speaker. Users can code their own robots to work any way they want in Creative Canvas mode, providing access to the programming tools outside of the five premade projects.Boost is not a replacement for Lego Mindstorms, which has been the company's flagship robotics platform for several years. The Move Hub is solely a transmitter and receiver device, offloading all programming and processing to the connected tablet and app.Instead of running code itself, it simply sends input out over the app and triggers its motors when the app tells it to. The Mindstorms EV3 Brick is a programmable microcomputer on its own, able to retain and execute code directly without a connected device.

Mindstorms is a more expensive and more powerful system, with more sensor and motor modules, and Lego has stated it will remain part of the company's offerings alongside Boost.I saw Lego Boost in action, and it has a lot of potential as a robotics kit in the same vein as Mindstorms. The robotics components in Boost show some engineering advancements that could also help produce a new fourth generation of Mindstorms. The Move Hub and motor and sensor modules are smaller than the Mindstorms equivalents, and while the Move Hub doesn't have its own processor for directly running code, it's still an advanced wireless receiver and transmitter with sensors and connections for motors, which means the next Mindstorms processing brick could be much smaller than the chunky one used with Mindstorms EV3. Lego hasn't announced specific plans for any upgraded Mindstorms sets, but Boost hints at some welcome changes.Lego plans to ship Boost in the second half of 2017, with a $159.99 retail price. The kit includes the Move Hub, a distance/color sensor, a motor and 843 Lego bricks.
