Leighlinbridge girl sells Lego collection to pay for dog’s vet bills ONE young Leighlinbridge girl has been collecting Lego for years, but there was no hesitation in selling it to raise funds for her foster dog’s leg operation. Sarah Baldwin (13) has put her entire Lego collection up for sale to raise funds after Tommy, a four-year-old Staffordshire Terrier and rescue dog, required surgery. Tommy first came to the Baldwin home in early summer through the charity A Dog’s Life, a charity which gives pound dogs a chance at a better life. Tommy was badly neglected, could not walk on his back leg and he underwent surgery on a cruciate ligament three weeks ago. The surgery and rehabilitation has left a bill of around €1,000 for A Dog’s Life and Sarah decided to arrange a fundraiser called ‘Lego for a Leg’. “I’m getting a bit old for the Lego now and not really playing with it. I decided I would put it to use and sell it,” said Sarah. The Presentation de la Salle student had been collecting Lego from the age of six and has built up a substantial collection.
“I have police sets, fire sets, helicopter, planes, trucks, cars and boats,” she said. “It takes up the whole spare room,” joked Sarah’s father Peter. Peter said he wasn’t surprised at Sarah’s decision, due to her love of dogs and volunteer work with ASH Animal Rescue. “I was surprised because she loved the Lego, but I wasn’t in a sense that she is always doing stuff like this, working with other charities, out walking dogs and using her pocket money to buy tennis balls and leads,” he said. The surgery and rehabilitation has meant a delay in finding Tommy a permanent home, but Sarah continues to care for and mind him until he is able to be rehomed. The dog has completely changed since he came under Sarah’s loving care. Where once he was anxious, he now loves a cuddle and chasing a ball around. “It took a few weeks for him to come out of himself but now he’s completely out. His tail is wagging the whole time,” said Sarah. All funds raised will go towards Tommy’s veterinary bills at Moss Veterinary Hospital and hydrotherapy session at the Canine Kennel Club, where Tommy goes for rehabilitation.
Any surplus will go towards A Dog’s Life charity. Lego lovers are invited to Ballinabranna GFC on Sunday 30 October from 10.30am-1pm for the sale. All Lego sets will be sold with instructions and at great value. There will also be a raffle and refreshments, too.
