Recently we discussed expanding the LEGO Modular Buildings by increasing their size in various ways. This is a great way to make your LEGO Modular layout unique. You can read the article here: How to Expand the LEGO Modular Buildings. Today we will look at another way of making your LEGO Modular Buildings special by changing their color. Some of the LEGO Modular Buildings lend themselves for color changes better than others. For example the #10246 LEGO Creator Detective’s Office is already quite colorful, and LEGO designers did an excellent job of pulling those different colors together. The #10211 LEGO Creator Grand Emporium and the #10232 LEGO Creator Palace Cinema both have a realistic and tasteful color-scheme that would be hard to replicate with other colors. The #10190 LEGO Creator Market Street, the #10185 LEGO Creator Green Grocer, the #10218 LEGO Creator Pet Shop, and the #10243 LEGO Creator Parisian Restaurant, however can easily be envisioned looking good in other colors. I

n fact, these are the LEGO Modular Buildings you will see customized the most. The sand-blue side of the LEGO Creator Pet Shop looks excellent in sand-green and sand red, especially when the three different colors are lined up next to each other in a row. The apartment side of the set also looks great with other color combinations. And the olive-green LEGO Creator Parisian Restaurant looks delightful in pretty much any shade of yellow, orange, pink, blue, and even lavender. But one of the most customized LEGO Modular Buildings is definitely the #10185 LEGO Creator Green Grocer. Part of building the LEGO Creator Green Grocer in other colors has to do with necessity. Those who missed out buying the set while it was still in production, and are not willing to pay the inflated prices on the secondary market, try to piece the set together themselves using BrickLink. However sand-green is a rare and expensive color and the LEGO Creator Green Grocer uses a lot of them, thus building the set even by buying pieces can get very expensive. S

o replacing sand-green with another color makes sense. Turns out the LEGO Creator Green Grocer does look great in other colors. To help you visualize the LEGO Creator Green Grocer in alternate colors, LEGO fan Xon_67 created digital versions of the set using different color combinations. Notice that replacing the expensive sand-green with the much cheaper regular green looks quite nice, and I really like the pink version too. Xon_67 also shows how the set looks using different textured bricks, particularly the two sides of the new masonry-brick. Masonry-bricks are still quite expensive to buy in quantity, but LEGO is including them in more and more sets, so prices should come down soon. Here I’m including a few examples, and you can find more combinations at Xon_67’s flickr gallery. If you would like to visualize the LEGO Modular Buildings in other colors, you can use LEGO Digital Designer to play with different versions of each building. You can download LEGO Digital Designer here, and the LDD file of each LEGO Modular Building from this page at EuroBricks (along with the LDD files of many other official LEGO sets). T

his is a great way to see how a set would look like in another color, if you don’t have the necessary parts at hand. Once you decide which color-scheme you like, it is much easier and cheaper to get the exact parts you need. And here is a list of the currently available LEGO Modular Buildings at the Online LEGO Shop. So what do you think? Do you collect the LEGO Modular Buildings series? Have you considered making them larger by adding extra floors or making the buildings wider? Feel free to share your thoughts and discuss in the comment section below! 😉
