Warner Bros. is double dipping with Batman on the big screen. Most of this attention has gone towards Ben Affleck’s portrayal of the iconic character, but before he made his debut, it was Will Arnett who stole the show as the Caped Crusader in The LEGO Movie. Two years later, Arnett’s lonely Batman is set to star in his own spinoff movie, The LEGO Batman Movie. With his newfound stardom comes a new world to explore, and with that comes Batman’s entire rogues gallery. Even in a LEGO adventure, it is still Batman’s archnemesis Joker – voiced by Zach Galifianakis – that will be the primary villain of the film, but he will not be alone. Earlier today, WB announced the expanded voice cast of the film that includes many familiar voices attached to the Batman villains. Now Joker has taken it upon himself to introduce his super villain buddies. Warner Bros. released the clip [above] that introduces a handful of villains. It appears that the clip is actual footage from the film itself, where Joker takes over a plane and lays out how this night will be different than most: He will defeat Batman.
How will he do this? Well, he has rounded up some of Batman’s other prominent villains to help, as well as a few misfits. For anyone who has seen a Batman film, read a Batman comic, played a Batman game, or has a general knowledge about the character, some of these villains will be recognizable. Riddler (Conan O’Brien), Scarecrow (Jason Mantzoukas), Bane (Doug Benson), Two-Face (Billy Dee Williams), Catwoman (Zoe Kravitz), and Penguin should be familiar, but after that, it takes a really hardcore Batman fan to recognize the other villains. Crazy Quilt, Eraser, Polka Dot Man, Mime, Tarantula, King Tut, Orca, Killer Moth, March Harriet, Zodiac Master, Killer Ghost, Clock King, Calendar Man, Kite Man, Catman, Zebra Man, and Condiment King, on the other hand, will be new to most. Just like the pilot in the video, most may wonder if these are all really villains Batman has faced over the years. As Galifianakis’ Joker says, “It’s worth a Google.” Unlike most promotional clips, this one does little of anything to spoil what The LEGO Batman Movie will be.
All it really does is show just how deep the movie dives into Batman’s comic history, and on that level it succeeds. If they are featuring villains such as these, there is no telling what other kinds of Easter eggs the movie will hold, whether that be characters, references, locations, or objects in the background. The new movie, described by director Chris McKay as Heat meets About a Boy, follows Batman (Will Arnett) as he tries to stop the Joker (Zach Galifianakis) while also raising Robin (Michael Cera). This trailer is just an absolute delight from start to finish. If I’m feeling down, I can just pop on this trailer, and it will cheer me back up. The animation looks gorgeous, and the humor is top-notch.
You can really see the About a Boy comparison that McKay made with Batman’s high-priced loneliness (the gag with him going through his TV inputs killed me), but there’s also a glimpse of how the movie will poke fun at other aspects of the Batman universe as recent as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
