Star performers and a record-breaking effort marked Land Rover’s launch of its new, fifth-generation ‘family-friendly’ Discovery off-roader this week at the Paris Motor Show. Land Rover set a new Guinness World Record for the largest Lego structure ever built — using more than 5 million bricks to put together a replica of London’s Tower Bridge. Adventurer Bear Grylls, yachtsman Sir Ben Ainslie and award-winning equestrian Zara Phillips, grand-daughter to the Queen, took part in the dramatic show around the 43 ft-high Lego landmark. Land Rover revealed their brand new Discovery with the help of ambassadors Bear Grylls (left), Zara Phillips and Sir Ben Ainslie (right) against the backdrop of the replica of London's Tower Bridge, made entirely from LegoThe Tower Bridge model took five months to build at Packington Hall, Warwickshire — close to Land Rover’s Solihull factory — using a total of 5,805,846 Lego bricks. Laid end-to-end, that’s enough to stretch from London to Paris.

During the show, UK car bosses and a trade minister assembled at the Eiffel Tower to fly the flag for British car exports. The new Land Rover Discovery will be priced from £43,395Grylls abseiled down a line from the top of the huge Tower Bridge replica, while Zara displayed her show-jumping skills and Ainslie took to water to test the Discovery’s 3ft (90cm) wading capability. The new seven-seater 4X4 hits showrooms next spring, priced from £43,495 for the entry level Discovery S, and up to £68,295 for the First Edition model — the first 600 off the line. The new Micra looks to be a big improvement on the model it replaces, but it won't be built in the UKA racy-looking new Micra turned heads on the Nissan stand. A huge departure from its predecessor, the fifth-generation Japanese super-mini will be in UK showrooms by March, priced from around £11,000. But it won’t be built in Sunderland, where the last Micra rolled off the line in 2010. Renault-Nissan chief Carlos Ghosn says investment decisions won’t be made ‘in the dark’ and will be deferred until the fall-out from Brexit is clear.

The all-electric Volkswagen ID has a range of up to 375 miles on a single chargeVolkswagen led the charge in Paris on new electric vehicles by showing off its new ID super-mini, but all major car-makers are switching to plug-in power. Driving the change to make electric cars more mainstream is the need to comply with tough new emissions targets. The all-electric Volkswagen ID has a range of up to 375 miles on a single charge, and goes on sale in 2020 priced from £20,000. The new range of plug-in cars will see VW producing a million electric vehicles a year by 2025. Volkswagen director Dr Herbert Diess said: ‘Our future will be electric and fully connected. We’re getting back on track.’ Jaguar boss Ralf Speth said work is well under way on its first all-electric car to take on Tesla. Expect something that’s designed for the job, but existing models, such as the F-Pace sports utility vehicle, could be electrified, too. Bloodhound will challenge the World Land Speed Record - which stands at 763mph -  next year with the financial support of GeelyChinese car maker Geely has come to the rescue of Britain’s Bloodhound land speed record attempt.

The firm, which owns Sweden’s Volvo Car Group and black-cab producer London Taxi Company, has signed a three-year deal as prime sponsor. It will offer technical and financial support for the speed attempt in South Africa. The world land speed record of 763mph is held by Thrust SSC, a UK team led by Bloodhound’s project director Richard Noble and driven by RAF Wing Commander Andy Green, who will pilot the new vehicle. The Bloodhound team said: ‘It means plans for challenging the World Land Speed Record in 2017 are now back on track.’ Pressure to increase the legal tread-depth limit before worn tyres have to be replaced is being opposed by the world’s largest tyre company, Michelin. It says tyre technology and performance has improved dramatically since the limit of 1.6mm was set in 1989, and that raising it to 3mm or 4mm of tread is unnecessary and should be resisted on safety, cost and environmental grounds. A Michelin spokesman said: ‘Changing a tyre with 3mm or 4mm of tread, instead of 1.6mm, equates roughly to an extra tyre per car every two years.’
