Overwatch continues to inspire LEGO builders with the hit game’s fun and varied heroes. Let’s rally up a few more characters to add to a lineup of great LEGO Overwatch builds, like these great characters from Tim Schwalfenberg, Simon Liu, or my own D.Va’s Light Gun. First up, from Dead Frog inc., is Bastion in his partial camouflage from the animated short “The Last Bastion.” The color choices on his robotic death machine and the overgrowth are great. Next up, from Piggy Brother, is Reaper. The builder has constructed several other heroes from the game, and his Reaper is one of my top favorites from him. The mask, dual hellfire shotguns, and shotgun shell belt are standout details to me here. Finally (from yours truly) is the time-jumping mascot of Overwatch, Tracer. Her build started with the idea of arranging two translucent orange half-circular tiles in an hourglass shape to create her goggles. One of the most challenging parts of the build for me was finding a technique that would look good as the lacing on her leggings.
I thought the undersides of the various 1×1 brick types used structurally was a good solution.Tell all your friends! ZaziNombies built perhaps my favorite replica from him yet in terms of screen accuracy with his LEGO Soldier: 76’s Heavy Pulse Rifle prop from Overwatch. The V-shape of the muzzle area and the blue barrel paneling are especially outstanding when compared to source material. The build is rounded out with nice touches like a removable top-loaded ammo cartridge and a light-up, wearable tactical visor. See it all in action in the video below. If you’re not familiar with Overwatch, don’t worry; some Soldier: 76 gameplay captures are also shown. Overwatch has been a wildly popular subject for LEGO builds lately. When Ana Amari was revealed as an addition to the Overwatch hero roster, I knew I wanted her rifle added to my LEGO arsenal.
It was an interesting short rifle design, had bolt action that would be fun to build, and even the concept of a healing sniper was a rad idea. The most challenging part of the build was the bolt action itself. There were countless iterations of the bolt itself that can simulate chambering the biotic round, the chamber walls hiding the bolt’s slots inside the body of the rifle to reduce gaps, and the trigger mechanism that released the bolt. All this design work led to a LEGO rifle that has realistic looking firing action, despite not actually firing. Watch this firing action, as well as other functions including a folding stock, removable magazine with opening mag cover, and glowing biotic round powered by BrickStuff lights, in the video below. You can also view all photos of the biotic rifle in my Flickr album. Bastion is a rather divisive character to fans of Overwatch. While adorable as a character, his charm does not forgive his unstoppable hail of gatling gun bullets. Piggy Brother’s LEGO rendition of Bastion is definitely a showcase of his charm.
Not only are the details of his Bastion model nearly spot-on, his pose with the bird Ganymede on his finger is just like Bastion’s concept art. The continuation of the black outline over the blue “eye” using a rubber band is a great detail. Piggy Brother even constructed his Bastion to transform into sentry mode. A rather impressive touch to his excellent model. See more photos on the builder’s Flickr. Effectively utilizing custom chromed LEGO elements, ZaziNombies creates a stunning replica of Jesse McCree’s Peacekeeper six-shooter from Overwatch. I particularly like the use of a Technic gear as my favorite touch of detail on the Peacekeeper in-game: the spur on the handle. I never would have guessed before playing Overwatch that I would build a pink gun for my LEGO arsenal.
D.Va quickly became my favorite hero to play in Overwatch, and her pistol used outside her mech looked rad. Plus, the bunny charm hanging from the mag well was too adorable. I find building a pistol or similarly sized 1:1 scale build harder than larger rifles, swords, or launchers due to the limited space for structural stability and that weapons of this size can be held with one hand. Combine this with the limited selection of LEGO elements in pink, and you have quite the building challenge. Working parts include a moving trigger and removable magazine. Click through to see more Overwatch builds by TBB contributors It seems I can’t go a single day without either seeing an Overwatch commercial or hearing a friend gush about how it’s the only game I should be playing right now. So it shouldn’t be surprising that LEGO builds inspired by this first-person shooter are popping up like crazy. In addition to the massively, massive Rocket Hammer and D.Va’s hot pink Mech we’ve already highlighted, here are some fantastic LEGO Overwatch characters. First up, Tim Schwalfenberg pieced together a LEGO Tracer, the female character who, according to the internet, can control the speed of her own passage through time. I recognized Tim’s build right away as the English-accented character who says “The cavalry’s here” in those too-often shown Overwatch commercials. Next up, Dead Frog inc. built a LEGO Zenyatta, the floating character with the power to heal others. While I didn’t recognize this character (Seriously, I promise to play the game at some point), I did appreciate this character’s clean lines and cross-legged pose.
Both builders captured the game’s style and built highly-poseable figs resulting in two LEGO models that look like they were built as part of one set. I’m excited to see which other characters pop up online in the future. Gaming weaponsmith ZaziNombies takes a swing at the most massive weapon in the popular multiplayer shooter Overwatch. His latest build, Reinhardt’s Rocket Hammer, is quite an impressive feat in LEGO engineering. It can be lifted, swung around, and hit against light objects without snapping in half or having any noticeable bend in the handle. Watch ZaziNombies swing his replica Rocket Hammer around and show a few of his construction techniques in the video, and then check out this awesome LEGO version of D.Va’s mech we featured last week. Blizzard’s new game Overwatch is awesome. I just can’t stop playing it, so when I saw that Taylor built D.VA’s Mech I was so happy I actually stopped playing to check out all the details this great build has.
