Trendsetter Skylanders is underperforming according to publisher Activision, and Disney unceremoniously pulled the plug on its Disney Infinity range earlier this year.Related: 10 best games you'll never play – the cancellation curseYou might assume then that the concept of buying expensive lumps of plastic which interact with video games is on the wane, but the growing popularity of Lego Dimensions (not to mention the evergreen status of Nintendo's amiibo range) proves otherwise – and the block-building behemoth has some impressive content lined up for its second year on the market.
Related: 10 amiibo figures that are actually worth buyingOne of the most appealing elements of Lego Dimensions is the fact that it's packed full of different movie, TV and video game icons. Want to see Superman fight alongside Doctor Who? Your wish is granted. Perhaps you feel it's high time that Homer Simpson and Gandalf formed a double act? The only limit is your imagination and the packs you own, and you're going to get a lot more options over the next few months – many of which will be like manna from heaven for anyone over the age of 30.The pop-culture Pandora's Box has been well and truly blown open with Lego Dimensions' next wave of figures. Those of you old enough to recall the Truffle Shuffle and the quest for One-Eyed Willy's secret treasure will be pleased to know that The Goonies are coming to the game, complete with an eerily authentic Sloth figure. The 1980s love doesn't end there, either – we've got the undead Beetlejuice, those lethal Gremlins (presumably not to be played after midnight), E.T.
The Extra-Terrestrial, The A-Team and Knight Rider coming in the near future, too.The only things missing in this glorious celebration of history's most garish decade are a ridiculous mullet, dayglo bum-bag and cheesy disco soundtrack, but this targeted assault on our nostalgia glands proves that the developers know adults buy these things just as much as kids. The next wave of packs isn't totally rooted in the past, however. Modern franchises such as Adventure Time, Teen Titans, Mission Impossible (the Tom Cruise version) and Ghostbusters (the 2016 reboot) are also getting their own packs, blocks and mini-figs, alongside franchises like The Powerpuff Girls and forthcoming Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.Elsewhere, video game icon Sonic the Hedgehog has been added to the roster – a move which ironically has attracted little attention, given the incredible stature of the character. Perhaps people are still stunned by the fact that they'll get to own Sloth in mini-fig form.
Money-spinning expansion packs aren't the only thing that Lego Dimensions has to offer in 2016 - new game modes are also on the way, including a multiplayer battle mode which tasks players with destroying the opposing team's crystals. All of the new figures come with gold as opposed to blue bases, denoting that they unlock a special battle arena complete with traps and items unique to their respective franchise.Amazingly, to enjoy this fresh content players don't have to shell out for another expensive starter pack or a new copy of the game, as is the case with Skylanders – all of these packs are designed to work with the existing starter set released in 2015, something that will soften the financial blow of spending your entire month's wages on blocks of plastic somewhat. Here are our picks from the next wave of Lego Dimensions, which is due to arrive in September.Ghostbusters (Story Pack) – AVAILABLE NOWOne of the most feature-rich packs in the second wave, this all-new Ghostbusters "story" pack contains new pieces for customising your Dimensions Portal as well as dialogue from the 2016 reboot of the famous spook-busting franchise.
There's a full story mode which follows the plot of the film, too. Compared to the previous "level", "team" and "fun" packs, this new story pack is quite a departure for Lego Dimensions and will presumably come with a high price tag.Adventure Time (Level Pack) – AVAILABLE NOWFinn and Jake's adventures in the land of Ooo have already passed into pop culture legend, with the animated series attracting a massive audience all over the globe. This level pack includes a Finn figure, while Jake uses his trusty morphing skills to turn himself into a vehicle to ride. A-Team (Fun Pack) – AVAILABLE NOWWe don't pity any fool who wants to get their hands on this pint-sized pack. It may only contain one character and a single vehicle, but when you're talking about legendary milk-loving, pteromechanophobic B.A. Baracas and the iconic GMC Vandura van, such quibbles melt away.Mission Impossible (Level Pack) – AVAILABLE NOWA somewhat leftfield addition to the Lego Dimensions stable, this level pack features MI operative Ethan Hunt along with a motorbike and sports car.
You'll be able to recreate famous scenes from the films, and that unforgettable theme tune will no doubt make an appearance, too. Hopefully the pack and its contents won't self-destruct after play.Harry Potter (Team Pack) – AVAILABLE NOWHarry Potter has been a mainstay of the Lego toy range for well over a decade now, and his addition to Lego Dimensions is very welcome, if somewhat predictable. The Boy Who Lived is joined by his arch nemesis Voldemort in this team pack, along with the famous Hogwart's Express and Weasley's flying Ford Anglia.101 Washington Street, Toms River, NJ 08753 | You are hereHomeCalendar of Events Ocean County Library, 101 Washington Street, Toms River, NJ 08753 | We're sorry, but your IP address (54.151.221.39) has been blocked from this site.
