The player must deliver pizzas to complete the first stage of the game, additionally, he or she can engage in non-compulsory activities, such as skateboarding at the skatepark and exploring the island. With all the blame that video games get for contributing to society's ills, it's comforting to know that parents have a paragon of good citizenship lessons in LEGO Island 2: The Brickster's Revenge. This adventure game, which is aimed squarely at the younger set, bolsters reading and problem-solving skills while teaching the benefits of being involved with and rebuilding a community. The malcontent Brickster has escaped the confines of the last game (players needn't have played the first installment to play this one), and has taken this island town apart brick by brick. To add to the confusion, he's unleashed an assortment of crazy--though mostly harmless--robots to get in the player's way. The game's protagonist is a pizza delivery boy named Pepper, and for some reason it's his job to find the scattered pages necessary to rebuild the town's features.
He finds these pages by interacting with the townsfolk and following their cues on which tasks to perform and in what order. The diversionary tasks are made up of quick, fun minigames--including an early takeoff on Whack-a-Mole. It's tough to compete with the more action-oriented games for this platform, but LEGO Island 2 does a good job. One problem we found is that the game is just too easy for older kids, while the amount of dialogue one must read from the game's various characters might intimidate younger kids.
