Aprovechando los recientes lanzamientos de 'LEGO Legends of Chima' y hace algunos meses el máximo exponente de la serie, 'Lego City Undercover', no hay mejor oportunidad que esta para repasar la historia de Lego y sus videojuegos. Más allá del éxito producido por los juegos de Traveler’s Tale, lo cierto es que los vídeo juegos de Lego vienen desde mucho tiempo antes del ya famoso 'Lego Star Wars'. En el año 1997 Mindscape lanza 'Lego Island' desarrollado para Microsoft Windows. Este sería el primero de la serie 'Lego Island' y, también, el primer juego basado en la franquicia Lego.
Wes Jenkins, quien era el director creativo y escritor, en el pasado estuvo involucrado en los infames juegos 'Mario is Missing' y 'Mario’s Time Machine'. El juego originalmente sería parte de una serie, pero solo un juego fue planeado en ese momento para continuar directamente con una secuela: 'Beneath the Phanta-Sea' y estaría localizado en el mar llamado 'Phanta-Sea'. Jenkins trabajaría posteriormente en un piloto para TV que incluiría muchos de los personajes disponibles en 'Lego Island'. 'Lego Island' es un juego no linear con una perspectiva en primera persona. Entre varias de las misiones disponibles podremos repartir pizza, correr en jet ski, y perseguir a Brickster para llevarlo a prisión. Si bien podremos buscar al enemigo para llevarlo a prisión, lo cierto es que no hay una narrativa u objetivo marcado necesarios para el usuario. Básicamente el juego es un sandbox donde el usuario puede customizar y hacer lo que quiera sin orden alguno. El juego fue altamente aclamado por la crítica en publicaciones familiares e infantiles.
Aclaman la interactividad y customización del ambiente, y lo accesible que es su jugabilidad y humor. El éxito de este juego es lo que convenció a Lego para realizar más juegos basados en su franquicia. De la saga 'Lego Island' solo hubo dos juegos más llamados 'Lego Island 2: The Brickster’s Revenge' en el año 2001 y 'Island Xtreme Stunts' en el año 2002. 'Lego Island 2' fue lanzado para PC, PS1, Gameboy Color, y Gameboy Advance. Esta primera secuela fue recibida con poca aceptación, rondando el 5 de 10 entre varios medios, sin importar la versión. Por otro lado, 'Island Xtreme Stunts' fue lanzado en el año 2002 para PC, Playstation 2, Gameboy Advance. El juego repite las mecánicas de sus dos anteriores entregas, con el agregado del uso de varios vehículos y el hecho de que nuestro protagonista, Pepper Roni, forma parte de un grupo de actores de riesgo en películas. Este juego disfrutó de una peor recepción, pues en PC el juego no era estable, obligando a los usuarios a reiniciar sus ordenadores constantemente.
