Hugh Jackman Would Return as Wolverine for an ‘Avengers’ Crossover Hugh Jackman is done with Wolverine. He’s made that exceptionally clear. Nobody, not even Ryan Reynolds, can convince him to return to the role after Logan hits theaters. Well, nobody except maybe Kevin Feige. According to the famous comic book movie star, the one thing that might have given him pause to reconsider his X-Men retirement would have been a potential deal with Marvel, bringing his version of Wolverine to meet Iron Man and, most crucially, the Incredible Hulk: “If that was on the table when I made my decision, it certainly would have made me pause. Because I always love the idea of him within that dynamic, with the Hulk obviously, with Iron Man but there’s a lot of smarter people with MBAs who can’t figure that out. Fans probably shouldn’t get too excited by this, though – it’s likely that Jackman only feels that he can get away with saying this because there’s almost zero chance of a deal ever being reached between Marvel and Fox.
The two studios have been waging a bitter war over character rights for the better part of a decade now, and as time goes by, the wranglings between the two companies become all the more fraught. It seems unlikely that we’ll be getting an Avengers vs X-Men any time in the future, so don’t expect to see Jackman fighting Hulk any time soon. Just as billionaire playboy Tony Stark utilizes his technological know-how to fight evildoers, so does director Jon Favreau use his bag of cinematic tricks to lay the groundwork for yet another top-caliber franchise starring one of the biggest icons of the printed page. Delivering laughs as well as leaps of wonder, this comic-book fantasy gets it right across the board, with its buoyant tone never diluting the grounded dramatics of the story. For the flick to work, though, one needs an exceptional cast -- something this production has in spades. Sure, it's an origin story, but to the cast's credit, none of it ever seems tedious. Even if they basically follow the same superhero mold of yesteryear, the tight ensemble of Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Terrence Howard, and Jeff Bridges sells the action romp every step of the way -- so much so that one can't help but want more. It's quite evident that the best is yet to come, not only with this series, but also with big-screen Marvel outings as a whole.
