Below the hotel is a shopping mall called Empire Shopping Gallery. What caught my eye was a shop named Anime Trend and they are located on the first floor of the shopping mall.
The shop sells lots of figurines related to anime and I spotted them selling the Dragon Ball Z LEGO Compatible Minifigures! Of course they are not the official items since there are no official LEGO Dragon Ball Minifigs. Since I am a huge Dragon Ball fan, I bought all six boxes as there are only six different minifigures. They are selling 2 boxes for MYR10 (S$4) and hence it only cost me MYR30 (S$12) for all six minifigures. I only saw one shop selling the same thing in Singapore. The shop name is called Peek A Box and they have a branch at West Gate (3 Gateway Drive, #03-42, Singapore 608532). Peek A Box is a box rental concept shop and one of the box shop is selling it for S$25.90. Of course, you can get them from ebay as well. Set for release in March in Japan, the first wave features Goku, Super Saiyan Son Goku, Vegeta, Super Saiyan Vegeta, Piccolo, Krillin, Frieza and Cell. Priced at about $4, they’re presumably about the size of LEGO minifigs, which means Goku & Co. could easily make an appearance in, say, the new Doctor Who playset. (via TAG Hobby, Toyark)
Well, to the point that they don’t get an angry letter from the Lego Group asking them what the hell they think they’re doing, that is. But this new line of miniature toys based on Akira Toriyama’s designs of some of anime’s most recognizable heroes do walk a pretty damn fine line. The line of tiny “Figmes” include Goku, Vegeta (and super-saiyan powered up versions of them), Krillin, Piccolo, Frieza and Cell, and given that they’re around 500 yen—or $4— each, they’re most likely to a very similar scale that Lego’s own minifigures are. It’s impossible to tell if their feet let them get secured onto building blocks, but given just how insanely close to Lego minifigures these guys are, it wouldn’t be surprising if you could just pop them into a Lego set and be none the wiser, outside of the exaggerated and simplified faces. Maybe not so surprising, given the popularity of cheap, blind-bagged toys that’s swept the world, but it’s kind of amazing to see something like this from Bandai, just for the sheer comparison to Lego.
