Value of 10188-1: Death Star Most recent new and used values of 10188-1: Death StarJust a bit of an update to let you know that LEGO just added a bunch of sets to their retiring soon list.

This means that no more of these sets will be made and once the current stock is out they will be gone. Of course you can still pick them up on the secondary market for higher prices. So if you have any interest in the following LEGO sets I suggest you pick them up before they run out. Below is a sample on what’s new on the retiring soon list, and you can also see the full list here: LEGO Sets Retiring Soon at the Online LEGO Shop. Oh, and shipping is now free every day! ➡ – there are three LEGO Star Wars sets listed; a couple from the LEGO Star Wars Planets series, and the LEGO Star Wars Endor Rebel Trooper & Imperial Trooper battle-pack. This last one is particularly nice for building up your Star Wars armies, and the minifigs are also great for resale. ➡ LEGO LORD OF THE RINGS SETS RETIRING SOON – two sets are currently listed as retiring soon; the LEGO Lord of the Rings Gandalf Arrives (an iconic set from the first wave of LEGO Lord of the Rings sets) and the hard-to-find LEGO Lord of the Rings Orc Forge. T

he Orc Forge is a great set if you are looking for brown LEGO elements, and it also has the printed Orc helmets and armor with the white hand of Saruman symbol – these sell really well on the secondary market due to their rarity. ➡ LEGO LEGENDS OF CHIMA SETS RETIRING SOON – LEGO’s handling of Chima still baffles me. After all the initial build-up and claims that it will be better than Ninjago, all I see is dismal sales at retailers and with still no Chima TV Show. In fact LEGO has been including free Chima starter-sets with online orders… I guess they are trying to get rid of them. Anyway, whether you are a Chima fan or not, the line does include some very nice sets and beautifully designed minifigures. Several of them are in the retiring soon section, and they are also on sale! 🙄
➡ – unlike Chima, LEGO Friends seems to be doing great. The sets are beautiful and offer a great variety to both young girls and collectors. There is a new wave coming out soon, so a few of the sets from the previous waves are getting retired. Se

e some below, and more at the retiring soon list! ➡ LEGO DUPLO SETS RETIRING SOON – we don’t cover DUPLO here that often, but the line offers great sets for younger kids, and they also resell really well – with profits often beating regular LEGO sets. There are three sets on the retiring soon list. The LEGO DUPLO Train Starter Set looks particularly good for both play and resale. ➡ OTHER LEGO SETS RETIRING SOON – there are some other LEGO sets on the list that are worthy to pay attention to. The LEGO Creator Apple Tree House has been a very popular set and it is very nice. LEGO Minifigures Series 9 is retiring, so if you want to get them for yourself or for resale this is your last chance. Also, the LEGO Super Heroes Captain America Avenging Cycle is getting retired. There are some other odds and ends on the list, and as I mentioned you can check them all out at: LEGO Sets Retiring Soon at the Online LEGO Shop. I don’t always write a full post when sets make it to this list, but I have added a link at the right-hand side-bar for your convenience. It

is worth checking on it once a week or so. Are you planning to pick up any the retiring soon LEGO sets either for yourself or for resale? Which do you think would hold best its value for long term investment? Feel free to share your thoughts and discuss in the comment section below! 😉

Rumors started circulating even before the #10188 LEGO Star Wars Death Star was retired that LEGO was going to release a new Death Star. Some people thought it will be related to the new Star Wars film, others speculated that it would be like the old #10143 LEGO Star Wars Death Star II display-model from 2005, and some LEGO fans reasoned that it will probably be just an updated re-release with new minifigures and improved building techniques. A

nd this third group pretty much had it right; the #75159 LEGO Star Wars Death Star is basically the same thing as the original set, with updated minifigures. It is clear that LEGO felt that there was no need to change the original set, besides freshening up the minifigures and adding a couple of other small changes. On the box image the Death Star is even oriented almost exactly the same way as on the original set, to emphasize that it is the same thing. Nobody was expecting that the sets will be this similar. In fact, when the first images of the new set leaked in mid-August, most LEGO fans thought it was a prank. Even with a re-release people expected that LEGO will at least update some of the more unsightly features of the original model, like the stepped curves. Personally, I would have loved if the outside would be covered with opening panels! The collection of minifigures is nice, but I don’t think it justifies a $100 increase in price. Just to give you some comparison here is some data. T

he #10188 LEGO Star Wars Death Star was released in 2008 with 3,803 pieces and 24 minifigs/droids for a price of $400 (10.5 cents a piece). The #75159 LEGO Star Wars Death Star comes with 4,016 pieces (213 more pieces) and 25 minifigs/droids for a price of $500 (12.4 cents a piece). The #71040 LEGO Disney Castle is 4,080 pieces (so 64 pieces more than the new Death Star) for a price of $350 (8.6 cents a piece). From this perspective, it might make more sense to just buy the old Death Star (which still sells for around $400 on the secondary market and prices will likely drop once the new one is out), and maybe add a few updated minifigs. Or if you just want to get a big display set, the LEGO Disney Castle is a much better deal. Below are a few more comparison pictures of the two sets (old on the left, new on the right). What do you think? How do you like the new LEGO Star Wars Death Star? Do you think it is worth getting it? What interesting changes and updates you notice between the two sets? A
