The Lego Batman Movie Chevy's focus groups are taking on a new task: Giving a psychological assessment of Batman, Lego-style. In a funny and refreshing new take on the automaker's "Real People, Not Actors" campaign, a focus group of animated Lego minifigures are asked what kind of person would drive Chevy's all-new Lego Batmobile. "Judging by these rocket launchers, this person is kind of defensive," quips one woman, prompting an angry retort from Lego Batman, who hovers over the entire proceeding. Chevrolet is not selling Batmobiles. Rather the ad is the result of a partnership with Warner Bros.' The Lego Batman Movie, which opens in U.S. theaters on Feb. 10. The spot, by Chevy's lead ad agency, Commonwealth/McCann, directs viewers to Chevy's website where people can virtually configure their own Lego Batmobile. Chevrolet is also unveiling a life-size Lego Batmobile on Saturday during the first public day at the Detroit auto show that was made from 344,187 Lego bricks and took 1,833 hours to build.
"To work on the Lego Batmobile with Warner Bros. is an absolute thrill for us at Chevy," Paul Edwards, vice president of Chevrolet marketing, said in a statement. "Many of the themes in The Lego Batman Movie, like imagination, family and community, align perfectly with our Chevy brand values and add to the value of the partnership." A Chevrolet spokeswoman did not disclose if the brand has any product placements in the film. But she said the Lego Batmobile unveiled at the auto show was inspired by the "speedwagon" Batman uses in the movie. Chevy launched the real life, "Real People, Not Actors" campaign in April 2015. In the ads, the moderator, played by Potsch Boyd, seeks to elicit reactions from people about Chevy vehicles by spicing up focus group sessions. For instance, in one ad the brand arranged for people to get stuck in an elevator to prove the point about how terrible it is getting stuck -- while touting the mileage range of its electric Chevy Volt hatchback as a way to not get stuck.
The ads represent the first time in a while that Chevy has used the same campaign to tout its cars, trucks and crossovers, Steve Majoros, Chevrolet's marketing director for cars and crossovers, said in a recent interview at the Detroit auto show. The ads are producing a "cumulative impact," he said. When viewers see an ad, "they immediately know its from Chevrolet, they immediately have a sense of what we are about. The trick for us is to make sure that the individual model or product or message comes out in that execution." In the case of the Batman spot, the goal -- in addition to getting a few laughs -- is to use the Dark Night to drive people to the brand's website, where Chevy keeps a comprehensive list of its latest models and offers. Not going in with expectations, being pleasantly surprised by how good it was and how it takes you along for a ride that’s out of the ordinary, where everything is awesome.
Batman (Arnett) kinda ruined it for poor Emmett in that one and hijacked that film. So it would be only fair they gave him his own movie, right? Well, some studio executive thought so… and that’s how you have this movie. Which takes all the boring-ness of the Batman myth and pokes fun at it with the eagerness of a kid high on candy hitting a pinata. Thankfully, you’re spared the original story. Bruce Wayne/Batman is shown as nothing short of a cad, who’s not below sledging Iron Man just because he can. This film has him dealing with two people who want to get into a relationship with him. The new ‘comish’ Barbara Gordon (Dawson) is eager to be friend/partner to the Dark Knight, but the man just wants to be alone. Well, that doesn’t stop him from ogling at her, adopting an orphan, and saving Gotham over and over again. The Joker (Galifianakis) wants Batman to acknowledge him as his arch nemesis, but loner and narcissist that the Bat is, he cuts him down. Distraught, the clown prince ‘gives up’ his life of crime and settles in Arkham.
Batman then decides to send the Joker to the Phantom Zone where he can’t return and wreak havoc anymore. But Barb won’t have any of it. And then, there’s his pesky ‘son’, Dick Grayson (Cera) to deal with, too. Do Lego Gotham’s problem’s end there, though. And with Joker and everyone else locked in Arkham Asylum of their own free will, is there a need for Batman? If The Lego Movie was about an ordinary guy finding his inner superhero, Lego Batman is the complete opposite. It takes the Bat myth and makes you hate, then feel sorry for and soon, despise Batman. It takes the super out of hero, and shows an alternative, darker take on the Dark Knight. What’s even more hilarious is what ensues after the Joker hits up the Phantom Zone, where all the bad guys are locked away and cannot harm anyone, and sets them free. The idea that anything can, will and should go wrong is an idea worth exploring. And the fact that WB/DC continue to poke fun at Marvel as well as their own roster of characters (look out for the eye of Sauron) as well as a few others (Whovians, do look out for the Daleks!)
