Learn how to "upholster" a chair with fabric and Mod Podge. Full tutorial by Designer Trapped in a Lawyer's Body!Rush seats usually have a shellac or linseed oil finish. A well-used chair seat tends to lose luster over time and the usual solution is to refinish it. You can't refinish a seat made from woven rush in the same way you refinish a wooden seat, however, because rush damages easily. It may unfurl or stretch if you get it wet or use paint stripper on it. The old finish is usually either shellac or linseed oil, however, and both of these finishes accept a new coat without the need for removal. A good cleaning of the old finish is in order if you aren't stripping it. Cover all the wood surrounding the seat, including the lower portion of the chair back, with masking tape. Use painter's masking tape, which is blue. You can pull it off without disturbing the finish on the wood. Rub the seat with a rag dampened with denatured alcohol. If the seat is coated with shellac, the alcohol emulsifies it and allows you to wipe off the surface layer.

It won't emulsify linseed oil, but it does remove the grime. Wipe the seat with a dry rag as soon as you're finished rubbing it with alcohol. Inspect the rag, and if it's dirty, wipe the seat again with alcohol. Continue alternating rags until the dry rag is clean after you wipe the chair. Inspect the seat to determine what kind of finish material to use. When the rush has lightened appreciably, it is probably finished with shellac and you should use shellac to refinish it. When there isn't much change in the color, the finish is probably linseed oil and that's what you should use to recoat it. Make a shellac solution by dissolving 1/4 cup of orange shellac flakes, available at paint and hardware stores, in 1 cup of denatured alcohol. To apply an oil finish, mix 1/4 cup of boiled linseed oil with 1 cup of paint thinner. Spread one coat of shellac with a paintbrush and let it dry -- which takes about 20 minutes -- then spread a second coat. When you're applying linseed oil, wipe on several thin coats with a rag.

Rub the excess off with a clean rag after each coat and wait for the oil to dry before applying the next one. Peel the tape off the chair carefully after you're done spreading the finish and let the chair sit for 24 hours before you use it. /Getty Images Suggest a CorrectionLast month I found two matching rocking chairs on Craigslist. I loved their shape and style knowing they would be perfect for my new front porch. Though the red paint on the chairs is a classic color, I wanted to give them a fresh, yet timeless vintage look and knew I would be doing that with Chalk Paint® decorative paint by Annie Sloan. I chose the Duck Egg Blue for these chairs, a new color choice for me. You can see all the colors that the Annie Sloan paint come in as well as the retail directory where you can purchase the paint on Annie Sloan Unfolded. My favorite thing about the Chalk Paint® is how easy it is to use and how professional it looks when finished. The only sanding required is when you want to give the weathered look by sanding the paint off the edges.
