Announced in September 2024, the Nikon Z 50mm f1.4 is a great addition to Nikon's Z-mount lineup. Promising a classic focal length, a bright aperture, and a budget-friendly price tag.
Nikon didn't update the optical scheme of the lens, which consists of 7 elements in 6 groups for a very long period. For the first time, this scheme was implemented in Nikon Nikkor 50mm 1:1.4 (AI) lens in 1977 and was replaced by a new one, consisting of 8 elements in 7 groups only in 2008 year in Nikkor 50 1.4g lens.

The Nikon 50mm f/1.4G replaces the older Nikon 50mm f/1.4D model (introduced in 1986). Compared to the AF-D version that has 7 optical elements in 6 groups, the new 50mm f/1.4G has a completely different optical design with 8 optical elements in 7 groups.

The only weakness I could find on the Nikon 50mm f/1.8G is its distortion, but then the more expensive primes like Nikon 50mm f/1.4G and 50mm f/1.4D also have a moderate amount of visible distortion. I really enjoyed shooting with this lens in outdoor environments and it performed great even in challenging light.

The AF-Nikkor 50mm 1:1.4D is Nikon's current version of their fast 'standard' prime lens, and while this specific model was introduced in 1995, the basic optical design dates back to the manual focus 50mm 1:1.4 AI of 1977. It features a traditional layout of 7 elements in 6 groups utilizing spherical surfaces only, which Nikon claims will deliver distortion-free images with superb resolution ...
But one thing unites nearly all of these disparate systems: a standard 50mm (or equivalent) prime lens. Though many Nikon shooters opt for the cheaper 50mm f/1.8G (or its elder cousin, the even cheaper 50mm f/1.8D) for their first prime lens, the standard-bearer 50mm for FX shooters is the AF-S 50mm f/1.4G (MSRP $484.95).
