Tips for restoring antique barber chairs include using bathroom cleaner to clean porcelain chairs, using porcelain repair kits to fix chips and cracks and removing rust using aluminium foil and water. What are tips for getting free home furniture? Porcelain barber chairs are typically made with porcelain over cast iron. The pump tower and seat base are the main areas where cast iron is used. Porcelain used on vintage barber chairs is usually durable and can easily be cleaned using a bathroom cleaner such as DOW or 409. Antique chairs may have rust stains, especially around metal attachments. These stains can be removed using a scouring pad and products such as Barkeepers Friend, LimeAway and CLR.

Small chips and cracks on the porcelain can be fixed using porcelain repair kits found at most home improvement stores. Allow the compound to dry and harden and wet-sand the area before buffing. Larger areas may require professional assistance because the job needs expert skill to blend the repair seamlessly. Most vintage barber chairs made of metal use cast iron covered with chrome or nickel. Rubbing a small, wet square of aluminium foil over small areas of rust is a good way to clean the chrome. Lastly, although expensive, professionally re-chroming vintage barber chairs is the best way to get a good finish. Learn more about Furniture What are some tips for finding free furniture? Kochs chairs.  The videos show several places where the metal has degraded.  In the first video, they switched the original black cushions out for some majestic-looking new red cushions.

There are a couple of pics of the chair in several pieces.  The new chrome looks spectacular! If you would like to get your own project barber chair, or have one restored for you like the one in this slideshow video, you should contact Custom Barber Chairs. Check out their website here. Here’s the second slideshow video, from the same company.  This is an even older chair from the 1920s.  A lot goes in to restoring an old chair like this one.  This one in particular looks to have been in worse shape, which should be expected, considering it is around 30 years older than the chair in the previous video.  Nonetheless, they did a tremendous job of restoring it.Click on the CONTACT US tab and call for parts and sales.  We’ll be showcasing some other restoration projects, but these two stand out at the moment as being superb.  These guys really know what they’re doing, and it shows in the workmanship.  Did I mention the chrome?  Look at it in both videos.  They polish and chrome old, rusted metal, so it looks brand-new again!

If it wasn’t for the style, you’d have no idea that either of these was an antique barber chair. Every last detail, from the upholstery all the way down to the screws, is restored.  This is a time-consuming and sometimes very expensive process.  No wonder these chairs have a high price tag when they are fully restored.  If you have a knack for any kind of restoration, these antique barber chairs will fetch you a nice payday.  Of course you have to find one that needs to be repaired first. Where can you do that?  Well, eBay, for one, has loads of them all the time.  It’s hit or miss as to whether you find one that needs restoration or one that has already been restored.  Generally, though, you can tell by the price.  If it’s less than $1000, chances are the antique chair has not been restored.  Make sure you get all the details before buying.  You wouldn’t want to end up with a rusty chair that’s only a few years old.  If it’s a Koken or a Theo A. Kochs or a Paidar, you don’t have too much to worry about.
