While the minimalist trend was in full frenzy, we were winning mountain trail races and ultra marathons in our crazy-looking shoes. The smirks at midsoles twice the thickness of other running shoes soon turned to "ahas", as runners tried Hoka One One and felt the difference. Light and surefooted during a race, with more cushioning at the end, Hoka makes runners feel like they’re gliding over the ground. Maximum cushioning and minimal weight provides unique comfort and stability. Our Meta-Rocker midsole with its low heel to toe differential and sculpted outsole propels you forward, while encouraging your natural running gait. Supports natural running gait. Gives a smooth roll from impact to toe-off. With hoka your foot sits deep in the midsole rather than on top of it. This means inherent stability for all types of runners, without the constraints or weight of extra support material.

Another question about our upcoming trip......my husband does wood carving and wants to know if there are any shops or places that sell "raw" wood for carving? We ran across a couple of places while on the big island and wonder if there are any on Kauai. Check out Randy Fleming at Hawaiian Hardwoods in Kilauea.

It's an intesting place to visit. I'm not sure if sells the wood for carving, but you can ask. Edited: 1:58 pm, January 01, 2011 One destination mentioned in this post One of the most prized woods here is koa - there is a store selling not only Kaua'i koa-made items, but the wood as well - here is the link: It is just outside of Lihu'e and easy to find. I can hook you up with some monkey pod! Rorygirl, thanks for asking this question. I've been wondering this too as my youngest son has been interested also. I think your post is the first time I've seen this question asked here. That "Koa Store" Janet linked sometimes has some nice raw wood in their "scrap bins" that they sell at different prices depending on how much "Curl" is in the wood. I picked up a nice 4" by 2' piece a couple weeks ago to do some custom trim in my bath with a table saw and router - came out really nice. Never tried any hand carving, but it sounds like a fun hobby. I actually like watching some of those guys on TV with the tricked out wood shops.

Edited: 3:54 pm, January 01, 2011 I can confirm what Janet said, that the "Koa Store" has cured pieces of all sizes for sale. The key is the curing: you can't just take the monkeypod that jebett had to cut down, you have to prepare it so it doesn't split later. The Koa can be expensive, but glad to hear from someone that it turns out well. Yes, the koa wood in the scrap sections isn't really "raw" in the true sense. It's all been dried in the kiln for weeks or months depending on the wood and size. it's just "raw" in that some of it is pretty rough cut along the ends. The piece a bought for $60 was actually a little over 2 inches thick and a little over 2 feet long. I used 3/4 th of an inch for the top of a privacy wall I built in my bathroom. I was going to use granite to match the vanity, but glad I chose the wood. I used another 3/4 for the backing of a towel rack in the same bath. I've got a little bit left over I'm going to try to make into a couple light switch plates.

My goal for the year is to make some built-in bookshelves with some koa veneer trim. My father-in-law is a really great woodworker who made some really nice shelves for his house in hilo that look like solid koa, but it's really just thin veneer. He made my daughter a really nice solid koa rocking chair and my wife a beautiful koa jewelry box for Christmas. He has one of those woodworking shops that would rival those guys you see on TV. -:- Message from TripAdvisor staff -:-This topic has been closed to new posts due to inactivity.
