Johannesburg is the largest and most populous country in South Africa. Although it is not the state capital as Cape Town holds that title, it is the most important economic centre of the country and the wider region. The city is called "Jo'burg", "Jozi" or "JHB" by its residents and is among the 40 largest metropolises in the world. In particular, its metropolitan area is the largest in Sub-Saharan Africa as its population exceeds 10,000,000. Historically, the area where the city is located today has been inhabited since the 13th century when indigenous Bushman and Bantu tribes chose it to build their settlements. Around the end of the 18th century the area had come under Zulu rule and shortly afterwards in the early 19th century Dutch settlers with the help of allies displaced the influence of the Zulu kingdom and combined with the gold deposits discovered in the area led to the establishment of the city of Johannesburg in 1886. From the very first moment of its establishment the city became a centre of trade in gold and all kinds of other goods. This reputation has always attracted many immigrants to the area and that is why the number of white residents in this city on the 'black' continent has always been significant. From 1880 the British presence began to be particularly noticeable and the first Greeks began to arrive in 1895. The 20th century, despite the clashes between the British and the Boer (African English-speaking race), began in the best of conditions as development followed geometric progress in all areas. Gradually, racial segregation became more pronounced which is clearly shown by the existence of the Soweto region inhabited by indigenous Africans and the Lenasia region which was home to residents of Asian origin. The result of this already existing segregationist tendency was the imposition of the anti-democratic Apartheid regime which lasted from 1948 to 1994 and which exacerbated discrimination and fuelled inequalities based on skin colour. Today, despite the crime that one may encounter in some areas, Johannesburg remains the city with the highest growth rates on the African continent. The official name of Johannesburg airport is O.R Tambo At the same time it attracts worldwide tourist interest, plays an important role in cultural events and has a number of remarkable museums. It is definitely one of the most unique cities in Africa and your visit here will be a special experience.
