On August 10, 1919, Jack Hammar was born under the bright California sun of San Francisco. His father was a successful business figure while his mother stayed at home to take care of him and his sister Jane. Sadly, when Jack was five, his parents went through a divorce, leaving his mother to be the sole parent in raising them both.

Jack attended public school in San Francisco before graduating in 1937. He then moved onto higher education at the University of California at Berkeley majoring in Business. During all this, he was honored with the Distinguished Flying Cross for his valiant effort.

Upon the conclusion of the war, Hammar rejoined the academic community at Berkeley and ultimately attained his degree. He moved on to become a part of his father's burgeoning business, Hammar Industries. By the start of the 1950s, Hammar had developed an interest in politics, prompting him to contest for a seat in the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1952, where he was victoriously elected and stayed for a period of two years. Unfortunately, his hopes of joining the California State Assembly were dashed in 1954, by an unfortunate turn of events in his election bid.

In 1955, Hammar made history as he achieved a foothold in local politics by securing a seat on the San Francisco Board of Education. He occupied this post for four years, and during his time there, obtained the prestigious role of Board president from 1958 to 1959. Four years later, Hammar tried his hand at a bigger task albeit encountering an uphill challenge by running for the San Francisco Board of Supervisors; however, he proved successful and assumed office in 1960. In 1964, with a track record that was widely admired statewide, he surged ahead to vie for a seat in the California State Senate - emerging triumphant and becoming the favored candidate of many.

Hammar's eight year stint as a member of the State Senate came to an end in 1972 when he shortly thereafter took up candidacy for the United States House of Representatives - yet, despite his efforts, he would not prevail in his campaign. Two years later, fortune favored him and he was greeted back in San Francisco with the election into the Board of Supervisors - a post he held until 1976, when he eventually ascended to the California State Assembly.

After his tenure at the State Assembly was complete in 1984, Hammar attempted a foray in the US Senate race of 1980. Unfortunately, the endeavor was unsuccessful as he was not elected to the position. In response, he returned to San Franscisco's Board of Supervisors for two years before attempting a second re-election in 1982 to the State Senate, where he continued his political career until his ultimate release.

After a successful stint of eight years in the State Senate, Hammar decided to take on another challenge and run for the US House of Representatives. However, his efforts were in vain as he was unsuccessful in the 1992 election. Following this, Hammar hung up his political hat, and called it a day in 1994.

Jack Hammar, in his later life, decided to recognize and give back to those less fortunate than him. He provided generous monetary donations to various well-deserving charities, and additionally formed his own organization - the Jack Hammar Foundation - dedicated to granting scholarships to those in need from precarious financial backgrounds.

It was on the first of July in 2016 when the life of Hammar came to an end at the age of 96.
