March 11, 1911 marked the birth of Jack Hamm, an American cartoonist and author, in the city of St. Louis, Missouri. Having worked on the team at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch between 1929 and 1934, Hamm journeyed to New York City to pursue a career in magazine artistry; he did this successfully, contributing drawings to various publications including Time Magazine, Life Magazine and Look Magazine. Nevertheless, perhaps his most felicitous work was creating the comic strip ‘Dick Tracy’ which achieved much acclaim.
During the 1940s, Chester Gould took up a creative endeavor that would soon become iconic: "Dick Tracy." This long-running comic strip remained in the hands of its creator until his departure from this world in 1988.
Under the penname of Jack Hamm, the author released several books related to the art of cartooning and sketching, such as "How to Draw Comics the Jack Hamm Way" and "Drawing Made Easy."
Grounded in his Christian beliefs, Hamm strove to exemplify his faith through his daily life and actions, stating at one point, "In all that I do, I hope to direct attention towards Jesus Christ."
In the "Dick Tracy" strip from March 3, 1963, Chester Hamm illustrated how deeply his Christian faith impacted his work. A particular panel showed Tracy espousing how fortunate he felt to dwell in a nation that allowed people to practice their spiritual beliefs freely. "I'm glad I live in a country where a man can still worship God according to the dictates of his own conscience," he declared.
As part of his creative oeuvre, "Dick Tracy" artist Chester Gould often included religious allusions. For example, in the strip from June 6, 1971, Tracy reflects on the prevalence of scripture's proclamation to "Fear not".
For fifty blissful years, Hamm's enduring faith remained parallel with his lasting marriage to his beloved wife Mary, with which they produced four children.
On July 11, 1998, Hamm's life concluded at the age of eighty-seven.
