There is no game that rivals the execution of Starcraft 1 and its balance between skill and tools for players to execute a strategy. A gap in mechanics can be made up in other ways but you can also dominate a game with your mechanical skills. It truly is an eSport. Starcraft 2 in my opinion is a better "game". It's one of the smoothest RTS games ever made, and the control + speed makes it play almost flawlessly compared to other RTS games (e.g. iron harvest, AoE 2 and 4, northgard, CoH, Warhammer total war games, etc). SC1 may take more skill to fight with the interface, but that's not the point of strategy games IMO. Normal difficulty on either of those games tends to be a lot easier than Brood War. Plus the units are much easier to control. It’s worth mentioning that the first campaign of Starcraft II is free if you want to give it a shot without investing anything. I think it’s harder to micro effectively in BW, but it’s more forgiving in that most fights don’t result in immediately losing the game. The pressure in SC2 is that individual victories tend to be decisive instead of marginal. It’s the one aspect of SC2 that keeps from investing time in it again. It's why many people (BW purists) were disappointed with StarCraft II, and also why many (arguably the majority) were very happy with it.
