Health Canada has announced the recall of the IKEA VYSSA crib mattress in various models. The date range of the affected products has been expanded. Updated Jan 13, 2015 Health Canada has announced the recall of  IKEA VYSSA crib mattresses. A gap larger than 3 cm between the mattress and the sides and ends of the crib poses an entrapment risk for babies. One incident in which the gap exceeded 3 cm was reported to Health Canada, and five to IKEA Canada. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported at all; but there have been enough reports of unsafe gaps that a recall has been issued. Here are the affected models, dated “May 4, 2014” or earlier (the date has expanded since the initial recall): See Health Canada for the complete recall notice. IKEA has sold 63,800 VYSSA crib mattresses in-store and online since 2010. If you have this product: Consumers are advised to measure the gap between their IKEA VYSSA crib mattress and the sides and ends of their child’s crib.

If the gap is larger than 3 cm, return the mattress to your local IKEA store for either an exchange or a full refund. For more information, call IKEA Canada at 1-800-661-9807 or visit IKEA.ca. Here are the guidelines for measuring crib-mattress gaps, from the Health Canada website: 1. Let new mattresses air for 72 hours after unpacking. It takes 3-4 days for the mattress to assume its proper shape and volume. 2. Remove all bedding, for example fitted sheets. 3. Push the mattress into one of the corners of the crib and measure the gap between the mattress and the crib’s side and end using a measuring tape. Any gap should be less than 3 cm. Though no injuries have been reported in these instances, any space between a crib and its mattress poses a serious safety risk.

There should never be more than two finger-width gap between the bare crib mattress and the crib end.Crib sizing is strictly regulated by federal law; the Consumer Product Safety Committee (CPSC) states a crib mattress should be at least 27 1/4 inches by 51 1/4 inches to ensure a proper fit. According to IKEA's recall announcement, "IKEA VYSSA crib mattresses are designed to be used with IKEA cribs." Standard sizing for cribs and crib mattresses allows consumers to purchase separate brands without having to worry about a gap.The affected VYSSA crib mattresses were manufactured on or before May 4, 2014. The manufacturing date can be found on the permanent label attached to the mattress cover. A VINKA model of the mattress in question is shown. IKEA is recalling almost 64,000 VYSSA mattresses that were sold in Canada because they are too small and a child could get trapped in the gap between the mattress and the crib. Health Canada posted a voluntary recall notice about the mattresses on its website Tuesday, noting that "a gap between the mattress and the side or end of the crib that is greater than 3 centimetres poses an entrapment hazard for an infant."

Health Canada advises anyone with a VYSSA mattress from IKEA to remove all bedding and fitted sheets from the product, then measure it and make sure the gap around the mattress is no more than three centimetres. If it is, "consumers should immediately stop using the affected product and return it to any IKEA store for an exchange or a full refund," Health Canada says. IKEA says a gap of more than two fingers between the mattress and the edge of the crib is dangerous. Mattresses affected by the recall were made before May 4, 2014 and include the following model names: The mattresses were all manufactured in Mexico and sold between 2010 and the date of the recall notice.
