Edit ArticleHow to Adjust Euro Style Cabinet Hinges If you have cabinet hinges that look like this, you can adjust them in several directions to make your cabinet doors shut more snugly. New and old cabinet doors can both be tweaked to perfection. It's easy, if you take your time and adjust gradually. Close the cabinet door and look very closely at which directions it needs to go. Open the door wide so that you can get access to the hinge. Adjust the hinge vertically. You may need to do this for all the hinges on a door at once. Loosen the top and bottom screws, push the door up or down as necessary, and firmly tighten the screws again. Support the door as you loosen these screws, or it could drop completely out of its initial position. Adjust the hinge in or out. Loosen this screw and push the door further in or push it further out. Try adjusting the hinges in this direction one at a time. It will help to prevent the weight of the door from pulling itself very far out of adjustment.

Support the door, especially if you loosen all the in-out adjustment screws at once. Adjust the third direction. Tighten this screw (turn clockwise) to move this corner of the door further toward the frame (to the right on this side); loosen it (turn counterclockwise/anticlockwise) to move the door away from the frame (to the left on this side). This adjustment can also be used to correct a door that is not hanging straight. If the top is further to the left or right than the bottom, adjust the top and bottom hinges separately to correct the tilt. Close the cabinet doors at each step and review your progress. This is absolutely done easiest with two persons. Adjust the hinges gradually. Adjust a little bit, check, and adjust Adjust the different directions separately, especially for coarse, initial adjustments. Make sure the screws that are in slotted holes (for up-down and in-out adjustment) are tightened firmly when you're done. These screws are holding your cabinet door up and holding your adjustments in place.

When you loosen the up-down adjustment screws, do so gradually, and be prepared to support the cabinet door so that it doesn't just slide down to the bottom of its travel. I've just finished putting together an ikea 'hemnes' cabinet with glass doors, and the doors aren't exactly lined up. Supposedly, the hinges are adjustable in three directions: up and down, left and right, and how deep they are in the cabinet. This site makes it look easy, but I'm having trouble getting it to happen. Does anyone out there have experience adjusting this kind of hinge? I'm in that deep, dark place that only botched furniture assembly can force you into.Annoyed by scraping, bumping, misaligned kitchen or bathroom cabinet doors?  Never fear, the fix is here--and it is easy, simple, and fast.

Hinge adjustment is one of the easiest, cheapest fixes you can make to your kitchen.  Even homeowners who shrink at the sight of a screwdriver and hammer can quickly take care of this frustrating daily problem.Believe It or Not, These Cabinets Have a Built-In ProblemIf your cabinet doors bump into each other, hang unevenly or do not close properly, it may not be time for new cabinets. Instead, the hinges just need adjusting, and it is the hinges' fault, not yours.European style cabinet hinges are meant to be readjusted occasionally.  Unlike surface-mounted hinges, which are never supposed to loosen, Euro-style hinges have a certain amount of "play" built into them.This play allows you to make the initial adjustment when the cabinets are first installed.  But play works against your favor, because constant opening and closing will, over time, cause the hinges to loosen.Exposed hinges on framed cabinets are less challenging to adjust than European hinges.  The downside is that they do not allow you to make changes in as many directions.

How To Know If You Have European Style Hinges (Frameless Cabinets)If any of these conditions are true, you may have Euro-style hinges:You bought your cabinets at IKEA or Snaidero..You have frameless cabinets, as opposed to framed cabinets. You look at your cabinets with the doors closed and cannot see the hinges.Your cabinets were advertised as "contemporary" or "modern" or "Euro." You have melamine or thermofoil cabinets.Procedure:  Frameless Cabinets Determine Hinge Type:  Look at your cabinets to figure out which type of hinge your cabinets have. European-style hinges have several adjusting screws. These hinges snap into a cup on the cabinet door and then attach to a plate mounted inside the cabinet. Frame cabinet hinges are mounted to the small strip of wood in the front of the cabinet base. Examine:  Open the cabinet door and look at the part of the hinge attached to the cabinet base. There should be four screws on this part of the hinge. Two screws, located at the top and bottom of the hinge, mount the hinge to the cabinet.

Turn:  Turn these first to make sure the door is secure. This may solve the problem. If the door is still too high or low, loosen these screws, adjust the cabinet door to the right height and retighten the screws. Further Adjustments:  The remaining two screws can also be used to make adjustments. The screw closest to the back of the cabinet is the depth screw and moves the doors in and out. The screw closest to the cabinet door allows the doors to move from side to side. Playing Around:  Unfortunately, there is no exact science to adjusting European-style hinges. You’ll have to resort to trial and error at this point, experimenting with the depth screw and side screw to get the desired result. Turn the screw and move the cabinet door to the desired position. Close the cabinet doors to see whether the fit is good. If the doors still need adjusting, try again. Procedure:  Framed CabinetsLoosen:  To adjust the cabinet doors, loosen the screw or screws on the cabinet base.  Loosen only a little bit;
