It replaced a Wayne Dalton iDrive garage door opener, which I cannot recommend. The Wayne Dalton company was bought by Overhead Door, and the iDrive is no longer manufactured. Liftmaster makes a model similar to the iDrive called "Wall Mount". My recommendation: Buy the normal/popular unit, not the "unique" wall mount unit.I decided on Liftmaster for these reasons:* Family members have old Liftmasters.* Liftmasters last a long time, and they are reliable.* They have good reviews.
I decided on model 8557 for these reasons:* Lifetime warranty on belt and motor* 5 year warranty on parts* Belt drive8557 says it is designed specifically for heavy-load doors and reinforced doors in high-wind areas. I wanted a heavy duty unit. I wanted this to be my last garage door opener. This Liftmaster unit is supposed to be for professional installers only.As an alternative, I was also considering the Chamberlain 1/2-HP Whisper Drive Belt Garage Door Opener, Model LW3500. It is also a belt drive and has the same warranties as the 8557 model. Liftmaster makes Chamberlain.I wanted an AC motor, because they are the most popular. I did not want a DC motor, since they are not as popular in garage door openers. I don't want to be the guinea pig; that's what happened with the iDrive. I also did not want a battery backup. Because batteries wear-out after a few years (whether they are used or not), and large batteries are expensive, and the electricity rarely goes out in my area.I had to have my Liftmaster 8557 professionally installed, because I was changing from the Wayne Dalton iDrive opener to a normal garage door opener.
The iDrive sat above the garage door on the wall, so I did not have a rail; it looks like this listing on Amazon does not include a rail; the professional installer provided a rail for my installation. Also, the Wayne Dalton torquemaster spring needed to be replaced with a normal torsion spring.I have a normal 2 car garage. As far as torsion springs are concerned, I did my research. Normal springs last about 10,000 cycles (one cycle = up and down). Probably 1 spring would be good enough for my door. Instead, I paid a little extra and got 2 high cycle torsion springs (40,000 cycles). They should last me a lifetime.The garage door itself is a popular Wayne Dalton model, so installing a normal opener and normal torsion springs were not a problem.Thankfully, the builder included electrical wiring for both the iDrive style and the normal style of garage door openers, so no additional electrical work was needed.The only problem that I have experienced so far with the Liftmaster 8557 was during a very hot summer day.
Nothing was blocking the sensors. When I pressed the button to close the door, it moved 1-2 feet and then returned to the open position. The wall control unit displayed some nonsense error message. As with most computer/electronic devices, when they have problems, reboot or restart. So, I went to my fuse box and shut-off the power to the opener for a minute, and then turned it back on. It worked just fine again.
