human hands

Art has always been considered an expressive media, and each artist has their own way of creating art. If design is not art, then each designer does not need their own way of creating it. If it us, each designer should be using their own process, their own hands. Draw something. See how your hands cant create a perfect curve, you cant ⌘Z, you can’t adjust the anchor points. Thats where the humanity lies. Thats where you lie. If you cant see yourself in your designs, what makes you any different from a robot. Before the computer was introduced into everyday lives, designers used their hands. Letters were printed and produced. Type was precious, they were not just downloadable files that were found after searching “cool font free.” Designs were not easy to produce. Todays’ designers have lost that, they’ve forgotten. Instead of a printing press, its the post button. We’ve created too much content. Too many designs. Too many products. Too many posts, hashtags, followers, likes, comments, brand deals, content creators, blogs. Designs now feel sterile, computer-generated, thoughtless. Anyone can create thoughtless work, not everyone can make your work. If you cant see yourself in your work, why did you make it. Your work is a chance for you to put your identity out there, into the world. The world is flooded with art and design and color and computers and highway signs and take out menus, but lacks humanity. The humanity becomes in when you show imperfection, you show life.

The world has been designed by those of our past.

You’re not designing it, but your are designing for it. We all know the flaws in society, and would like to remake the world in a our way, but we can’t do that — and we shouldn’t. What we can do its highlight the humanity of the world, the beautiful cultures and emotions and people. Show these things in your art. Shove the humanity in peoples faces. Take a walk. Look at the graffiti covered walls. These people are shoving their humanity in your face. They’re saying look I’m here. I’ve been here, and I can create. While graffiti culture has been commodified, its ideals still stand. Don’t limit yourself to what you see on the screen. Go outside, pick up a pen, a camera, and create.
