Make the decision that sets your ride apart. My mum lives in a retirement flat that has parking for residents but not for visitors. I’ve tried sneaking a spot for an hour or so but I always get caught. It doesn’t help that often I’m in something like a Porsche 911 GT3 RS, a car that’s not usually bought by the elderly. Or a Rolls-Royce Ghost which is a bit out of the average pensioner’s budget. But this weekend I got away with parking for the whole morning. Because I was in the new Honda Jazz and almost every resident in mum’s block owns a Jazz. Honda once told me that 65 per cent of Jazz sales are to people who have owned them before. The reason is quite simple: they’re reliable and extremely practical.

For a car that’s the size of a Ford Fiesta they have a lot of room inside. I’d recommend one to Peter Capaldi anytime because Doctor Who would feel at home in one. Especially the new Jazz. It’s completely new from the tyres up and has a longer wheelbase, which means that it’s even more spacious inside. We’re testing the 1.3 i-VTEC EX Navi which is the top-of-the-range version and costs £16,325. Amazingly for a road test car, it has absolutely no options fitted, not even metallic paint. Our car has a manual gearbox but you can order it with a CVT automatic version. I’d recommend going for the automatic gearbox because it will make it easier to drive. We’ll get the Jazz’s failings out of the way first. The engine, despite being new, produces its peak torque at 5,000rpm. The 101bhp unit is naturally aspirated whereas many rivals have turbocharged engines that have a much wider spread of torque that peaks at far lower revs. Although it’s new, the Honda’s engine certainly doesn’t have class-leading economy or emissions.

But most annoying of all is a very light throttle that makes pulling away tricky, trickling in slow traffic irritating and, if you’re not very careful, very jerky. To top it off, the engine is harsh when you rev it, which you have to do to keep up with fast-moving traffic. The EX Navi, as its name suggests, comes with sat-nav as standard. You get a 7in touchscreen that’s not the easiest to use because the resolution isn’t that high and you have to be very precise when touching the on-screen icons. The heating controls are touchscreen as well (separate to the nav system) and they don’t work that well either. From now on it’s all good news. There’s even more room in the back thanks to the longer wheelbase, with more than enough head and legroom for even the lankiest adults. Two will be really comfortable and three will be happy on all but long journeys. Honda’s Magic Seat system has been carried over from the old Jazz which, to remind you, means seat bases that can be flipped up to allow long loads to be carried or folded down completely to make a flat loading area.

The boot is very generous, the sill is low so it’s easy to get stuff in, and the aperture is wide. The new Honda Jazz’s faults are outweighed by its practicality and Tardis-like interior. The automatic gearbox would make it easier to drive smoothly, and the infotainment system could be avoided by buying a lower-spec model that isn’t fitted with it – or you simply get used to it. I can thoroughly recommend the new Jazz to Mum’s Jazz-owning neighbours – although I suspect that most of them are more than happy with their current cars. More sporty, which is fairly irrelevant, better engine, which isn’t. Technically a compact crossover but it’s a great buy and a good alternative. Superb fit and finish but can’t match the Jazz for space.
